Tales of classic scandals, scoundrels and scourges told through vintage newspaper accounts from the golden age of yellow journalism

A Wretched Witch Of A Wife

A Wretched Witch Of A Wife

    The Lizzie Halliday Horrors

Episode 305 kicks off Lady Serial Killers Month with the strange story of Lizzie Halliday, the perpetrator of at least five, maybe six murders, and once you hear about those, you’ll wonder if maybe there weren’t a few more than that. In addition to six murders, the spice in this tale includes a near-lynching and the lunatic antics of the prisoner, the first American woman to receive a death sentence in the electric chair.

    Amusement and indignation,

Culled from the historic pages of the Middletown Times, the New York World, and other newspapers of the era.

The Earp Brothers Take A Stand
Episode 319 takes us on a journey to one of the most famous gunfights in Old West history, the shoot-out at the OK corral. The first two thirds relates the story from the newspaper accounts of the day, while the third act gives a first-person account from Wyatt Earp himself.
Culled from the historic pages of the Tombstone Epitaph, the Arizona Daily Star, the San Francisco Examiner, and other newspapers of the era.

    Murder Of The Blonde Butterfly
The Saga Of Ruth Freed’s Itchy Trigger Finger
Episode 222 tells of the unsolved murder of a professional party girl in post-Prohibition Chicago. Well, technically it’s unsolved because no one was ever tried and convicted, but I think it’s pretty clear who the culprit is.

Murder And Arson At Brandywine Springs Park
Episode 448 is a sad and sordid tale of a passionate frenzy, when a young woman’s divided attention puts one man in a rage and leaves another to grieve.

    The Reily Mattock Murder
Episode 198 is centered on one of my favorite murder tropes, the so-called “eternal triangle,” between the cranky old farmer, his fading wife, and the handsome young farmhand. Yeah, that’s not going to end well, but they might have gotten away with it if they had just put the body across the tracks. It’s all in the details.

    The Scoundrel Gershon Marx
Episode 447 retains a lot of the discrepancies in the reporting of the story, so don’t be alarmed at conflicting versions of the same incidents. I can’t say for certain that they ever got some of the names right, but nothing could be more wrong in so many ways than the theatrical adaptation of the case that takes place at the denouement.

Jim T -Highland NY ,

Great podcast... but!

Have been long time listener love this podcast. The Narrator is / was fantastic. Recently he started using Different voices for theCharacters I may be the only one but I can’t stand it. I liked it when it was as if he was just reading the newspaper to us. Please go back to the old format.

Listened to a few....not very good

I listened to a few of this guys Podcasts from the first season and didn’t really like it. To each their own, I think it’s boring. The voice overs are SCARY BAD!!!
