Rethinking Trauma: Self-Regulation and Healing Trauma with Robert Rhoton

Rethinking Trauma: Self-Regulation and Healing Trauma with Robert Rhoton

How do we self-regulate when faced with triggers? CEO of the Arizona Trauma Institute and President at the Trauma Institute International Dr Robert Rhoton digs into the physiology of trauma, why the particular therapeutic model isn’t THAT important (as long as our therapists are trauma-informed), how being dysregulated is akin to a certain Marvel character, and why it’s important for our therapists to be regulated themselves. Plus, how our culture might not promote emotional regulation, practical ways to get regulated, and how we can actually begin to heal our trauma over time.

Rethinking Trauma: Resilience with George Bonanno

Rethinking Trauma: Resilience with George Bonanno

In honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, we're taking May to dive into trauma: how we think about it, how it works, and what we can actually DO about it if we're struggling. How can we live our best lives, even if we've had difficult or terrifying experiences?

In part 1 of the Rethinking Trauma series, Lola and Meagan chat with Columbia professor and PhD George Bonanno about his pioneering research into trauma and resilience, how we aren't necessarily doomed to be traumatized when we experience something terrible, why "coping ugly" is okay, and how flexibility can help us become more resilient.

KimtheSnowflake ,

So fun and informative!

I freely admit that I am completely obsessed with cults - of course I am - why else would I listen to this podcast, right? Scientology, Nexium and the Manson family are my biggest obsessions. This show covers those and so many more cults and cult-like behavior. I love Lola and Meaghan. I think their banter is perfect - just enough so for me to get to know them and laugh at their humor but not so much that it distracts from the purpose of the podcast. I feel like I’ve learned so much about the pervasiveness of mind control and psychological abuse (and frankly just awful parenting!). I think they’re so respectful of those who have been in colts - or who remain in them today. I highly recommend this podcast if you really want to get into the mind of those who join cults.

Good Subject Matter Ruined by Personal Biases

These two women put a lot of time and research into the topics, but constantly use the recording time to push their political beliefs. This time would be better used for something other than bashing and insulting those who don’t agree with them.

Not for me

I couldn’t make it through the first episode. Every single step of the first woman’s story was a giant red flag screaming STOP what you’re doing. I didn’t feel like I was learning anything new.
