Riotsville, USA + Sierra Pentegill | Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman | Norwegian Wood (2010)

On Truth & Movies this week, archival documentary Riotsville, USA tells the strange and disturbing story of the increased militarisation of the American police force in the 1960s, and the building of “Riotsvilles” to train police officers to violently suppress civil disorder, and director Sierra Pentegill talks to us about her film. We then review the animated Haruki Murakami adaptation Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman, before turning our attention to his earlier adaptation, Norwegian Wood, in Film Club.
Joining host Leila Latif are LWLies Editorial assistant Marian Ashioti and writer/broadcaster/programmer/former Truth & Movies host Michael Leader.

John Wick 4 | Infinity Pool + Mia Goth | Wake in Fright (1971)

On Truth & Movies this week, Keanu Reeves is back in action as avenging assassin John Wick in the saga’s fourth – and longest – instalment. Alexander Skarsgård has a very bad trip in Brandon Bronenberg’s Infinity Pool; co-star Mia Goth joins us to discuss her busy year on the big screen. And continuing the theme of people having a bad time abroad, Ted Kotcheff’s Ozploitation classic Wake in Fright gets a welcome run out in Film Club.
Joining host Leila Latif are LWLies Digital Editor Hannah Strong and freelance journalist Meg Walters.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods | Rye Lane + David Jonsson & Vivian Oparah | Bhaji on the Beach (1993)

This week we suit up for another superhero sequel – but will Shazam! Fury of the Gods live up to its predecessor? Then it’s off to South London for Raine Allen-Miller’s delightful rom-com Rye Lane; and we’re thrilled to be joined by stars David Jonsson and Vivian Oparah. In Film Club, we revisit a lesser-seen British minority comedy, Gurinder Chadha’s 1993 Bhaji on the Beach.
Joining host Leila Latif are LWLies Editor David Jenkins and freelance writer Cheyenne Bunsie.

Scream VI | Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey | Cynthia Erivo on Luther: The Fallen Sun | Friday the 13th Part 8

On this week’s Truth & Movies, the Scream franchise lives to fright another day as the post-modern slasher saga swaps Woodsboro for the Big Apple. Things get sticky in hackneyed horror spoof Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey. And in Film Club, 1989’s slasher deep cut Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan gets a rare revival. Finally, we’re joined by the supremely talented Cynthia Erivo to chat about the Luther movie and more.
Joining host Leila Latif are freelance film critics (and self-confessed horror hounds) Anton Bitel and Patrick Sproull.

Creed III | Close + Lukas Dhont | Buck & The Preacher (1972)

This week Michael B Jordan dons his boxing gloves for the third time (and directs for the first!) as Apollo Creed in Creed III, and we take a peep at the Oscar-nominated Belgian drama of bittersweet childhood trials, Close. We also speak to Close director Lukas Dhont and screenwriter Angelo Tijsssens to glean insight on how an adult is able to write authentically for a child. Finally, for Film Club we revisit the 1974 Sidney Poiter western, Buck and the Preacher.
Joining host Leila Latif are freelance film critics and writers, Christina Newland and Jack King.

Cocaine Bear | Clint Dyer interview | Broker | Grizzly Man (2005)

This week an unsuspecting bear does a lot of cocaine and is reborn as Cocaine Bear and we’re also looking at Hirokazu Kore-eda’s black-market baby drama Broker. The Deputy Artistic Director of the National Theatre spoke to host Leila Latif about his adaptation of Othello and the challenges of creating a cinematic “NCT Live”, and LWLies’ Marina Ashioti is live from the Berlinale telling us about all the festival’s biggest and best titles. Finally, for Film Club we returned to bears, with Werner Herzog’s harrowing tale of hubris, Grizzly Man.
Joining host Leila Latif are Saskia Gaiger from LWLies and one of its contributors, Billie Walker.

Titles

Please just simply list out the movies in the episode titles. It’s really annoying the way you changed it. Doesn’t make it better at all. Will change my review to 5 if you do.

Great UK/European Perspectives

This is a wonderful review show of current films that also features a classic or under-appreciated movie. This is a show for people with open minds. Those who go hunting for media to label as “too woke” can spend time elsewhere.

Like nostalgia, not what it used to be

Excellent at times but is just too “inside baseball.” Feels like a podcast where the audience is actually irrelevant. Smart, eloquent, cogent discourse on film is always welcome - but this is by the podcasters for the podcasters
AC Jimbo sorely missed - kept it real - but he probably doesn’t have the time, energy or brain power/verbosity to bother.
