Phenomenal - grim but compassionate

This review is seriously overdue—Turncloaks is such a solid, enjoyable story that I'm now on my fourth full relisten, and it hasn't gotten a single bit less riveting. Everyone on the cast is masterful at building characters that are believable for the low-fantasy setting while still being deeply interesting and fully realized, all contributing to the setting's sense of grim foreboding. Turncloaks doesn't go too far in the direction of either fluff and humor or darkness for the sake of darkness—yes, there's heaps of dark content, but it all serves the story's purpose and gives the cast a chance to develop their characters' incredible, overlapping emotional arcs.

What makes Turncloaks truly stand out for me, though, is the moments of chat before and after each episode. You get to know what the cast members are thinking about each development, and they take their time to work through and process the most harrowing turns in the story. This is not, despite some jokes to the contrary, a crapsack world just for the sake of rubbing your face in it. Oh, it's crap, but it's crap with a core of love, heart, and true family.

Wonderfully Dark RPG

Turncloaks is set in a low magic dark world using mechanics from 5E of D&D. This actual play podcast build a universe that at times will leave you gasping from shock or crying from the story. Each player RPs their characters very well and Will is a master of storytelling and DMing (I tip my hat to you sir).

If you like your actual play podcasts with great storytelling, characters and a well built world then this is for you. Highly recommend
