How Gender Norms Are Hurting Your Sex Life Ft. Emily Nagoski

How Gender Norms Are Hurting Your Sex Life Ft. Emily Nagoski

J&J are back with another Sunday Special, and this week they’re joined by Emily Nagoski, sex researcher, educator, and author of Come As You Are. They start with a discussion about spontaneous vs. responsive desire, and Emily explains why she believes we need to center pleasure in your sex life instead of desire. Then, they answer an email from a listener who says she can’t have an orgasm and feels like she can’t ask for things in the bedroom because she won’t come anyway. Emily breaks down all the stories the emailer is telling herself and advises her on how to have a conversation with her boyfriend about it. Plus, they talk about how the cultural scripts we’re given based on gender are getting in the way of our sex lives.

Do I Need To Live In A City To Date?

Do I Need To Live In A City To Date?

This week’s episode is coming to you virtually from Jordana’s apartment and Jared’s parent’s pool house. Jared gives a breakdown of his experience being the main character of his family’s Thanksgiving. Then, J&J dive into Bumble’s dating trend report for 2023. They compare Bumble’s statistics to the results from our Instagram polls and talk about why this whole survey feels a little bit like propaganda to keep people on the apps. The Awkward Sexual Encounter is a marina makeout gone wrong. Later, an emailer asks how she’s supposed to date while living in the suburbs. Should she lie about her location on the app to get more matches? Is she better off trying to meet people IRL? J&J finish the episode with a round of Red Flag or Deal Breaker about mixing up dates, changing the subject, and bathroom talk in a relationship.

    Sliding Vs. Deciding

    Sliding Vs. Deciding

On this week’s episode, J&J start with a coaching session for Jordana’s gift-receiving reactions and a pep talk for listeners going out on Thanksgiving Eve. The first emailer asks how important a sense of humor is to a relationship. The guy she’s seeing checks a lot of boxes, but is it doomed if she cringes at his jokes? The Awkward Sexual Encounter is another almost fairytale in the streets of Rome. Later, a listener asks if you have to live together before getting married. J&J finish the episode with a round of Red Flag or Deal Breaker about biking manners, bad breath, and art gallery etiquette.

I love the pod but it’s time

I love the pod and will always listen, but it can be a bummer that Jared isn’t addressing long term issues with any sort of real work. He’ll talk to Jordana about it but nothing comes of it. I think it’s almost weighing on my mental health with dating and it sounds like it is for a lot of other listeners.

I just wonder if doing this even makes Jared happy? Clearly he doesn’t enjoy dating, but it seems like he can’t admit to that. Instead he values the ego-driven aspect of always having a first date and then break up to follow that’s in his control. I encourage Jordana to bring this up. It’s time for some hard to hear advice for Jared that he so easily gives to the listeners and even his own uup team.

Episodes skipping?

Is it just me or are the episodes skipping? For example in the latest “do I need to live in a city…” episode, Jarrett is reading the story about the girl hooking up with a guy and receiving a text right after and it skips over what she wrote!!

Come on ,

Agreement

I agree with a previous review on here. Jared keeps comparing himself saying “I’m 10% away from someone you’re dating” which I simply don’t think is true anymore. Most men I know who are 38 are married, in serious relationships, or divorced. I don’t want to tell him what to do, but it is slightly a turn-off listening to him give advice about other men when I don’t believe the majority men are in the same boat as him or have the same issues he does.
