    Phone Use at Performances

    Phone Use at Performances

Dr. P and Sarah address this week's controversial Ian Bostridge performance where he stopped mid song cycle to ask the audience to put down their phones and turn off the flash functions. It was a varied and weaving conversation with two sort of opposite perspectives. In the end, the take home point was, be courteous, consider others, and let's get audience members in seats. Join us.

    Academic Voice Job Searches

Coming off of Dr. P's recent faculty search and interview process Sarah was curious to hear more about what the job search process is like in 2024. Dr. P shares some thoughts on the overall academic music job market (the bleak part), followed by some recommendations for those applying for positions, and finally some hopefulness about why you still might consider pursuing graduate degrees in voice.

    Words Revisited

    Words Revisited

One of our VocalFri philosophies has always been not getting caught up on what terminology we use, as long as we can define and describe how we are using those words. We discussed this on an older episode, but we've seen a lot of recent posts regarding terminology and it seemed like a good time to revisit this topic. An interesting, winding conversation.

Half really good information and half about dumb tv shows resembling 60s pulp

It’s me, I’m the listeniner speculated to exist by Sarah on the Christmas episode who has never seen a single Marvel movie or episode of Doctor Who and only the first 3 star wars. You ask what I think about your commentary, and my answer is that I completely tune it out until I pay enough attention to realize it’s time to skip to the next episode. I’m giving it five stars even though I have some complaints about the format (would be nice if you had episodes that were solely devoted to singing and vocal pedagogy, and then episodes that are solely devoted to cartoonishly violent tv/movies for children).

I think this change would be appreciated not only by people like myself who are vocology geeks but not comic book & sci fi tv nerds. as well as my complement who I’m sure must be out there somewhere, a non-singer non-geek certified NNerdwho sits through all the singing talk because they’re so excited to hear you talk about The Immovable Flob 15 or whether you ate a waffle made of oat husks and wild harvested dandelions and whether you put margarine on it

Keep up the good work? Break a leg? I don’t even know anymore mznt

Fantastic for teachers and academically minded students!

I finished my grad school with Dr. goffi-fynn and realized many of the sources we used for our projects are either heard or discussed in this pod. Also, having a movie podcast (@theloveofcinemapod), I love the intersectionality of ped and culture!

It’s like grad school, only better!

This podcast provides more tangible information and insights about the voice, vocal technique, and life as a singer than you might get in an entire graduate degree program! A must subscribe for voice teachers, students and others!
