Doing Work Aligned to Your Values and Life, with Kiersten and Julien Saunders, authors of Cashing Out

When we talk about activism through a financial or economic lens, most of time, people think of two things: shopping and investing. And those are important. But the single biggest financial decision we make is what we do for a living, our work.
My guests today are Kiersten and Julien Saunders, who I think are incredible role models for thinking about work, both doing work that aligns to your values, and maintaining maybe the healthiest work-life balance I’ve seen among people whose work is fundamentally online. Kiersten and Julien Saunders are the creators of the Rich and Regular blog, the creators of the Money On the Table YouTube series, hosts of the Rich & Regular podcast, money editors at Success Magazine, and now authors of the brand new book Cashing Out, which I highly.
We talk about choosing work that’s aligned to your values, making trade-offs to focus where your heart tells you to, and the upsides of working for yourself.

Real Change over Good Intentions with Michelle MiJung Kim, author of The Wake Up

Real Change over Good Intentions with Michelle MiJung Kim, author of The Wake Up

Today I'm bringing you an interview with the author of a new book -- out today! -- that I can't recommend highly enough. The book is The Wake Up, and the author is Michelle MiJung Kim. The Wake Up is an important and necessary book for our times, about how we can take all of our do-gooder intentions and make real progress in fighting the status quo, while avoiding the harm that all too often accompanies good intentions. The book is practical and instructive, and raw and vulnerable, all at the same time. It belongs on your bookshelf next to Ijeoma Oluo and Dr. Ibram Kendi's essential books. Do yourself a favor and find a way to get your hands on it ASAP. Until then, here's a conversation that I absolutely loved with Michelle. Enjoy!

    What Is Wallet Activism?

    What Is Wallet Activism?

Wallet activism is using your financial power in all its forms to change the status quo, going beyond what you spend to look at how you earn money, where you live, where you bank, how you donate, and so many more financial choices we make every day.

Cant wait for more!!

I’m halfway through the book, and am so excited by the prospect of more in-depth companion episodes. I thought I had a decent handle on so many of the topics Tanja wades into, but she has given me such an education! And even though the issues are incredibly complex, and sorting through them responsibly and intentionally can be a daunting task, she allows space for everyone to come at these issues on their own terms. I never felt shamed for making decisions that were far from perfect. I am learning, and I aim to do better each day and with each use of my dollars. Tania’s guidance and candor make it that much easier.

Integrity and personal financial power

I’m excited for more episodes! I appreciate Tanja’s integrity about having no sponsors, and it makes me trust her show and book even more (can’t wait to read it).

Quality podcast!

Tanja, thanks for putting out quality, information-dense content. I loved your book Work Optional and am ordering Wallet Activism. In your books, interviews, and now with this new podcast you bring a clear and authentic way of communicating ideas around financial independence, personal growth, and social justice that is rare. Many other interviewees and hosts dilute their discussions with a lot of personal content or even rambling that doesn’t add value to the topic, but your concise style communicates that you want listeners/readers to think differently and reflect as much as possible so that they can act and make change in their own lives. Keep up the great work!!
