    Unlocking the Immune System

    Our guest in this new episode is an academic super star: Prof. Carmit Levy who is the Chair of the Department of Human Molecular Genetics & Biochemistry at the Gray Faculty of Medicine. Levy is a renowned researcher in the area of skin cancer. Prof. Levy and her team recently made a groundbreaking discovery involving a protein called Ly6a, which acts as a “brake” on the immune system. This protein, expressed both after UV exposure and in tumors, prevents immune cells from attacking cancer effectively. In experimental studies, the team showed that blocking Ly6a with a specific antibody reactivated the immune response, causing tumors to shrink—even in cases resistant to existing immunotherapies.This research, published in Nature Communications, not only advances our understanding of the immune system but also points toward entirely new treatment possibilities.     What is Bio-Inspired Material?

    Prof. Lihi Adler-Abramovich, Department of Oral Biology, The Goldschleger School of Dental Medicine, the Gray Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences at Tel Aviv University Prof. Lihi Adler-Abramovich, Ph.D. is with the Department of Oral Biology at The Goldschleger School of Dental Medicine which is part of the Gray Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences at Tel Aviv University. She is also with The Center for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology and The Center for the Physics and Chemistry of Living Systems, both at TAU. In this new episode Prof. Adler-Abramovich is educating us about applications of nano science and materials designed and fabricated in a lab that were inspired by nature (bio-inspired materials). What started as applications for dental sciences, especially with bones, became critically important due to applications across the board from Osteoporosis among the elderly (Osteoporosis is a condition that weakens bones, making them more prone to fractures. It is a common condition, especially in postmenopausal women and older adults), to the regeneration of skin cells. Prof. Lihi: "In my Laboratory of Bioinspired Materials is focused on mimicking self-assembly processes that occur in nature, including biomineralization and the organization of short peptides and amino acids into ordered nanostructures. We are a material science laboratory with emphasis on organic chemistry and medical-biological applications.     What Can We Learn From the Behavior of Insects?

    Prof. Amir Ayali, School of Zoology, Tel Aviv University   In this new Episode we dive into the captivating world of neuroethology and bio-inspired innovation. Our guest is Prof. Amir Ayali, a leading researcher at the Faculty of Life Sciences, who served as head of the Zoology Department from 2011 to 2015. His groundbreaking work reveals how the tiny brains of insects, like locusts and cockroaches, produce complex behaviors—from individual movement to swarm dynamics.  Ayali’s research focuses on the neural and biomechanical mechanisms of locomotion, using insects as models to study motor control, decision-making, and group coordination. He explores how neural systems, such as central pattern generators, integrate with sensory feedback to drive behaviors like walking, flying, and digging. His findings on locust swarms uncover how simple visual cues lead to coordinated group movement, offering insights into both biology and agricultural challenges. Additionally, he investigates insect-environment interactions, including the effects of artificial light and microbiomes on behavior.  A pioneer in interdisciplinary science, Ayali translates biological insights into bio-inspired technologies, from robotic locomotion to novel digging tools. His work bridges neuroscience and engineering, advancing our understanding of adaptive behavior while sparking innovative applications.     Dr. Raz Zimmt, Director of the Iran and Shiite Axis Program at the INSS and a research fellow at the Alliance Centre for Iranian Studies at TAU Israel-born Dr. Raz Zimmt is the director of the Iran and Shiite Axis Program at the INSS (Institute for National Security Studies) and a research fellow at the Alliance Centre for Iranian Studies at TAU. He holds master's and doctoral degrees in Middle Eastern history from Tel Aviv University and a bachelor's degree in Islamic and Middle Eastern history from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. His doctoral thesis, supervised by Prof. David Manshari and Prof. Eyal Zisser, dealt with Iranian foreign policy toward Nasserism and Arab radicalism between 1954 and 1967. Overall, Prof. Maoz will present three areas of expertise: Advanced tools to study human physiology – where he uses tissue engineering to create advanced tools that better mimic human physiology (e.g. Organs-on-a-Chip, organoids, iPSC).Integrated electronics – where he develops implantable electronics that enable to restore tactile sensation.Biohybrid robots – where he integrates the sensory systems of insects with robotic platforms to enable super-sensitive identification of smell using biological sensors. His mission is to solve both problems at once: Food security and energy security. How is going to achieve this goal? That’s exactly whet this conversation is all about. Fellow researchers from Tel Aviv University explained his idea: To use green algae as tiny solar-powered factories that can produce two things we urgently need: clean hydrogen fuel and protein-rich food. By growing algae with sunlight and water, his team can generate renewable energy while also creating nutritious biomass that can be used as food or feed. This way, the same system helps tackle both climate change and global hunger at once.     Why protecting the environment is a collective interest?

    Our guest is legendary US-born Israeli environmentalist, academic and politician, Prof. Alon Tal. Since moving to Israel in 1980, Alon Talk has established himself as a legal authority, public policy expert and visionary in the field of the environment. He is currently the Chair of the Public Policy School at Tel Aviv University. Among his many achievements, he founded (and co-founded) a long list of institutions and entities that are devoted to the promotion of environmental awareness, such as, Adam Teva V'din, the Israel Union for Environmental Defense (1990); Israel Union for Environmental Defense; Arava Institute for Environmental Studies (1996); Green Zionist Alliance: The Grassroots Campaign for a Sustainable Israel (2001); Ecopeace: Friends of the Earth–Middle East; This Is My Earth " TIME" initiative - an international effort to purchase biodiversity "hot spots" as conservation sanctuaries through crowd sourcing; Israel Forum for Demography; Environment and Society; Aytzim: Ecological Judaism; The Green Movement. He is the winner of the Bronfman Award 2006 and with the money received he also founded the Tal Fund. In addition he has served on the international board of the Jewish National Fund (JNF) and in recent years promoted a joint Israel-Palestinian plan to tackle environmental issues.
