When Election Results Hurt: Lessons From My Ancestors and Elders

After the election, I had to take a few weeks off to process the complex feelings brought on by the results. I had to re-anchor myself because I felt sadness, frustration, anger, anxiety, and other emotions that sapped my strength. But through reflection and grounding, I’ve shifted my perspective to one of possibility and purpose, even amid pain.

I know campaigns and elections can challenge us, revealing divides and systemic issues that feel insurmountable. Yet, history—and the wisdom of my ancestors—teaches us that no political outcome can define our purpose or limit our elevation. So, today, I decided to share lessons passed down from my elders and ancestors who navigated far greater challenges during their lifetimes. These lessons remind us how to stay rooted, discern our unique paths even in chaotic times, and protect our dreams that fuel our destinies. They remind us that we have the internal infrastructure to remain resilient, courageous, and creative to survive and overcome obstacles, barriers, and injustice. They remind us that WE have everything we need to move forward and upward.
