300 episodes

There are hundreds of Doctor Who episodes and stories out there and we intend to watch them all! Not just that – We’ll watch, review, discuss, debate, rate and praise and/or poke holes in every episode of Doctor Who, starting with the 1963 pilot. That’s right; we’re beginning with William Hartnell and then working our way forward through time, episode by episode and Doctor by Doctor. In parallel, we're also reviewing New Who, starting with Eccleston in the 2005 revival. At the time of writing this, we're already well into the Tom Baker and Peter Capaldi eras!

From comparing Dalek and Cybermen military strategems to ranking companions by hairstyle, we’ve got it covered. And while you subscribe to us on iTunes, we’re populating WhoBackWhen.com with written reviews, episode statistics and an ever-growing visual index of aliens, creatures, historical figures and companions that the Doctor meets along the way.

    B097 Series 14 (Season 1) Predictions and Bants

    With the new season steadily approaching, we sit down for predictions and bants

    * * *

    We’ve now been treated to no less than TWO teasers for the upcoming Series 14 of Doctor Who, and so we sat down for a boozy (well, for one of us) evening of predictions and general pondering.

    * How excited are we about the new series, and why?

    * How many Bridgerton references do we think there will be in the Bridgerton episode?

    * Is Agent Smith a colleague of Captain Jack’s?

    * Whom is Jinx Monsoon’s character playing and where do they sit in the endless hierarchy of hinted-at baddies?

    * Is Mrs Flood secretly The Rani? Is everyone?!

    * And Series 14 or Season 1?

    This and more await, Podcastland. Have a listen as we get back in the saddle.

    N179 The Church on Ruby Road — The 2023 Christmas Special

    N179 The Church on Ruby Road — The 2023 Christmas Special

    Inter-temporal infanticide and a divisive song-and-dance number. We spend more than twice its runtime dissecting The Fifteenth Doctor's first big adventure.

    * * *

    A mysterious cloaked figure enigmatically leaves a newborn baby behind on the collection doorstep of St. Building Atmosphere’s Church one snowy Christmas Eve, departing without so much as a “Goodbye, Ruby Sunday”. Who could hang that name on her?

    Flash forward 18 years and the foundling has grown up to become another wide-eyed portion of grist for Davina McCall’s sentimentality mill. But just when Ruby hopes to find out about her family, her foster mum Carla gets a new baby with the same birthday to care for over Christmas.

    Enter the Fifteenth Doctor, catching Ruby’s gin and tonic here, sprinting down roof ridges there. Turns out her accidents were no accident, this series of coincidences indeed no coincidence, as every adopted character ever fostered in the show has become fair game for the gobblin’.

    B096 The Fourteenth Doctor Retrospective

    B096 The Fourteenth Doctor Retrospective

    Tennant is back, inexplicably yet fabulously, prompting a customary, cocktail-fuelled retrospective

    * * *

    David Tennant returns to Doctor Who for a brief trilogy stint (at least to start with), this time as the Fourteenth Doctor. How curious, you might think. Why did this face return, they ask at the start, and you'd think they'd have answered this question by the end. Therapy, say some. Calculated corporate commercialism, say others. In any event, it's hard to refute that the trilogy of 60th Anniversary Specials has a lot going for it! Join us as we discuss the highs and lows of The Fourteenth Doctor!

    A taster of some of the topics discussed/dissected/speculated-on in this podcast episode:

    RTD's "Doctorverse"

    The companions

    The foes

    New U.N.I.T.

    The Tennant regenerations compared

    In what capacity will the 14th Doctor, Donna and Rose return?

    And why did this face come back?

    And if you haven't listened to our 60th Anniversary/14th Doctor reviews, what are you waiting for?! Click here now!

    N178 The Giggle

    N178 The Giggle

    The Toymaker temporarily relinquishes his confounding mock-German accent while lip-syncing to Spice Girls in Stark Tower for the conclusion of the 60th Anniversary Specials

    * * *

    It’s 1925 and John Logie Baird would have invented television already if only it weren’t for the tragic lack of a televisual crash test dummy. Fortunately, just across the road, the affable Mr Emporium’s Toy Shop stands ready and waiting. A few cuts later, a chap we’ve known was the Toymaker for at least a year now furnishes his assistant with a puppet whose noiseless, manipulative giggle will be emblazoned upon all types of screens forever. Fast-forward to 2023 and London—and by extension the world—is in turmoil.

    South Korea has just launched a new television satellite into orbit and suddenly everyone in the world thinks they’re all right then about everything. Anarchy is the only logical consequence and thus Doc und Donna join the UN-gers at Stark Tower to piece it all together. Cut back to 1925, and DnD have instantly tracked down the Toymaker, enjoyed front-row seats to a scaled-back NuWho recap for the Disney+ subscribers, lost a game, and whizzed back to 2023 again, where a second-rate third act and a hopefully first-class 15th Doctor await.

    N177 Wild Blue Yonder

    N177 Wild Blue Yonder

    D’n’D return for Midnight 2.0 in perhaps the most corridory episode of Doctor Who

    * * *

    Fresh from some leisurely bants asking Isaac Newton how does he like them apples, Doc and Donna hurtle to a fiery stop aboard a mysterious spaceship, where the first thing the TARDIS regenerates is its Hostile Action Displacement System so it can finally put itself back together in peace.

    It turns out their landing pad was off a corridor so long that it punctures the very bounds of the universe and penetrates the inter-cosmic space/not-space nothing no-thing voidy kind of realmy-wealm. But clangs on the hull and a puzzling airlock action put them on edge at the edge of creation.

    With only a succession of untranslatable words periodically refurbishing the scenery as clues, Doc and Donna must end the hostile action, and in the process come face to face to face to face with their own worst nightmares: slowing down, being called stupid, and, maybe, even a countdown.

    B095 The 2023 New Year’s Eve Bloops

    Another glimpse at some of the bits that didn’t quite go as planned

    * * *

    What-Ho, Podcastland!

    Hope you’re enjoying a sensational holiday season and looking forward to the most decadent of New Year’s celebrations!

    It’s been an eventful and momentous year! We FINALLY caught up with famous-TV-show-we-all-really-really-like Doctor Who, after over 10 years of podcasting about it. Yep, we haven’t uploaded reviews of the latest three Specials yet, but fret not, Who Back When Phase 2 is well underway, and we’ll return in 2024 with reviews of the remaining 60th anniversary specials as well as Ncuti’s first Christmas adventure. Can’t wait! :) Phase 2 also promises a tonne of other stuff. There may be the odd review here and there, and we have at least two audio adventures, possibly three, coming up soonish.

    But in the meantime, here are some of our traditional New Year’s bloopers, along with an enormous Hug to say thanks, Podcastland, for being some of the best people in all of Time and Space.

    Happy New Year!!

    Catch you in 2024!

    Ciao-Ciao

    WBW

Excellent Whovian Goodness

When I first discovered there were podcasts about Doctor Who in 2020, I sampled several to see which best suited me. Who Back When, led by Ponken/Leon and a variety of cohosts, became my Go To listening pleasure whenever I was driving, working in the yard, or just cleaning in the house. They have been doing this for ten (!) years, reviewing all the televised Who there is, both classic and new Who, and more than a few Audio Who stories. I find they take a critical, yet light-hearted look at every serial or episode, and some of the best ones to listen to are the ones where the writing, acting, or prodcution values weren't up to par for Doctor Who. I like listening to them discuss the show even when their opinions don't match perfectly with mine, because we are all humans who have different opnions. The Best Thing I like about this podcast is that they read out Listener Minis, which are reviews that some of their followers have submitted. Most other podcasts I have listented to sadly don't do this, to their loss. The only negative thing I have to say about them is that the language does get rough, hence the Parental Advisory, and therefore I don't feel comfortable plying it at work or around the kids. (If you like this one as much as I do, then my second choice is New to Who, but they don't have nearly as many episodes.)

I listen to…

The episodes when you like the story. That’s my preference. All around great podcast!

Boring

Everything they watch is great and wonderful and magnificent. If you just want to be told this fandom you are part of is amazing, I guess this is the podcast for you. Me, I like substance.
