Wine Women – Jason Holman, Rebel Vintners pt2

Wine Women – Jason Holman, Rebel Vintners pt2

Uncharted territory is where guest Jason Holman found himself when he chose a career in wine over one in the law. He just couldn’t see himself building a life around the Juris Doctorate degree he’d just earned. After a stint at Napa’s Kongsgaard dragging hoses, cleaning tanks and performing punchovers, aka “cellar rat” duties, he knew he’d found his calling. Thus began his adventures traveling the globe to learn about winemaking.

In part 2 of the podcast interview with Jason Holman, the co-hosts received a master class in natural winemaking. Tasting through Jason’s flagship brand, Uncharted Wines, the group sampled a few of his red wines. In keeping with his use of unusual varietals, secluded vineyards, and unconventional production techniques, Jason shared tales and tastes of his Carignan and Tempranillo, varieties seen far less frequently in winery portfolios than typical reds such as Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Another departure from typical winery models is Jason’s shared tasting room, Rebel Vintners, in downtown Napa, where you can frequently find him or his winemaker partners behind the bar. Rebel Vintners offers something for everyone…including your kids! (Jason’s own kids participate in learning about the business, but they’re also young kids. So the three Rebel Vintner partners provide space for kids in their tasting room just like their own.) Find toys, games, puzzles and more to keep the youngsters entertained while you sip and sample the many wines available to taste or purchase. For the adults, there’s the wine bar, a reading and conversation nook with deep, plush armchairs. Finishing out the tastefully appointed space are the requisite big screens if you’re dying to stay on top of the latest big game.

Most unusually, you’ll find the winemakers behind the bar! What better way to learn about these natural wines than from the winemaker himself?!

Download and listen to learn about Jason unique path and his dozen or so wines. Visitors to the Rebel Vintners tasting room may also sample Cadle Family Wines as well as Vine & Leaf brands from his partners. Rebel Vintners  |  Holman Cellars (Uncharted Wines)

Wine Women – Jason Holman, Rebel Vintners

Wine Women – Jason Holman, Rebel Vintners

What do you do with a Juris Doctorate degree? Why, become a winemaker, of course! Jason Holman knew by the time he graduated that he wouldn’t be stepping into any courtrooms. The world of wine beckoned during a stint at Kongsgaard, followed by several stints at other Napa Valley and South African wineries. Fast forward to our podcast recording in Jason’s downtown tasting room (which is shared with two other winemaker vintners), and you’ll get a master class not only in natural winemaking but also in Jason’s vision for taking the wine industry in a new direction.

Jason’s flagship brand, Uncharted Wines, uses unusual varietals, secluded vineyards, and unconventional production techniques, to provide wine lovers with an unforgettable experience in their glasses. All of these wines are made in very small lots (1-4 barrels) to ensure they retain the finest qualities. Listen in to learn why one vineyard produced an amazing harvest even after being submerged after a flood for months on end. Download and play to learn why Jason wanted to call his Pinot Gris a rosé (but the TTB wouldn’t let him)! Jason is forging his own, unique path in, well, uncharted territory.

Rebel Vintners offers something for everyone…including your kids! Jason’s own kids participate in learning about the business, but they’re also young kids. So the three Rebel Vintner partners provide space for kids in their tasting room just like their own. Finishing out the tastefully appointed space are the requisite big screens if you’re dying to stay on top of the latest big game.

During the show we were able to sample Jason’s Pet Nat sparking wine (method ancien), skin-fermented Pinot Gris, Carignan and Tempranillo – only four of nearly a dozen or more wines he makes under his Uncharted brand. Visitors to the Rebel Vintners tasting room may also sample Cadle Family Wines as well as Vine & Leaf brands from his partners. Rebel Vintners  |  Holman Cellars (Uncharted Wines)

    Wine Women – Ann Reynolds

    Wine Women – Ann Reynolds

What on earth is “wine compliance”? And why is it important? These are questions best answered by our guest, Ann Reynolds, chief compliance officer and founder of Wine Compliance Alliance in Napa, California. Ann’s been working in wine compliance for more than 20 years and founded her business 10 years. Ann’s services include everything from ensuring a winery’s wine labels meets current TTB (Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau) regulations to compliance training. She runs a busy YouTube channel providing this service and to keep clients abreast of the ever-changing regulations.

Ann has worked in many roles in the wine industry, from tasting room associate to lab technician, as well as adjunct faculty at Napa Valley College. She’s saved wineries thousands of dollars over the decades using her preventive measures (i.e. good compliance records) to ensure recordkeeping and reporting meets standards and regulations. On the show, Ann discusses the evolution of recordkeeping in the industry, from handwritten notes and forms through the modern use of digital recording.

Listen in to learn why you can’t put “Carneros” on your label if someone forgets to record “Carneros” on the crush pad weigh tags (example only). Also learn why these regulations exist in the first place. Ann explains the regulations about what percentage of grapes must originate from Napa Valley vineyards in order to put “Napa Valley” on the label. (Hint: It’s not 100%) Further, Ann goes into why it’s important to maintain and enforce reasonable regulations for the industry. | Wine Compliance Alliance
