Welcome to Women Bridging the Gap, a free-wheeling, conversation podcast co-hosted by Lenya Wilson, a Black woman and Alexandra D’Italia, a white woman.

As two women over 50 who are still dreaming, planning, and working, we explore what womanhood means in today’s world, in today's American culture. And for us, that means identity and race usually enter into our conversation.

We’re passionate, loud, funny, non-judgmental, and opinionated. We are feminists. We are elders. We believe in abundance. We believe in the power of storytelling. We’re not journalists, but we’re open about our experiences and eager to learn from others. We want to empower ourselves; and we want to share our experiences to empower you.

We began this podcast in response to the murder of George Floyd, Amy Cooper’s weaponization of her white femininity, and the subsequent uprising. We believe that honesty, openness, and love can bridge the gap between people of color and white people. This podcast is a safe space.

We bring people into the conversation, because your voices matter too. Just let us know. We want you to be in on our conversation—and help us move forward one conversation at a time.

What Doing The Work Feels Like

What Doing The Work Feels Like

Alexandra and Lenya discuss the balances of both doing work, and doing the work.
First work/life balance is addressed, and how we’re also facing hustle culture. Behaviors from this capitalistic pressure can be seen in the students in Alexandra’s classroom.
And both describe how they have been using social media to engage and distance themselves from what they need to.

    Still Processing the Dobbs Decision

    Still Processing the Dobbs Decision

    Still Processing the Dobbs Decision

Just a nice easy laid-back episode about abortion. We need to talk about vaginas more, and this is the perfect place to start.

Alexandra and Lenya both share their own abortion stories, and discuss the anxieties of kids coming of age in a society that restricts abortion.

Alexandra also reads an incredible poem by Jacaranda School for Orphan’s student Felicia Luciano called Our Members of Parliament. A poignant and direct statement in beautiful language.

    American Ninja Warrior Kadeem Aaron

    American Ninja Warrior Kadeem Aaron

Join us to talk with Kadeem Aaron, a successful Ninja Warrior on both the Australian and American versions of the show! He also happens to be Lenya’s son.

Kadeem goes over how he got started, what it takes to be a Ninja, some of the differences between the American and Australian shows, and his training practice. Lenya and Alexandra make analogies to their respective Formula One and teaching knowledge bases.

We’re changing the frequency of releases to two per month, so look out for those, and reach out if you have a topic idea or would like to be a guest.

    Racism in War

    Racism in War

Where is the line between breaking the law and being a crappy person? That’s just the first thing on the agenda today.

Lenya and Alexandra are together again and the conversation goes from sexual assult on social media, to Bill Clinton and abuse of power, naturally, and transitions to Formula 1, Star Trek, and the war on Ukraine.

Events like these can bring to light a lot of racism that we all just live with and think is the norm, until the flashlight of light-skin elluminates the evils we have all accepted.

Lenya and Alexandra argue about Mary K. Blige

It’s our 50th episode! Thank you all for listening, sharing, commenting, subscribing, and everything!

We have the Super Bowl halftime show conversation we promised last time. Where is the line between wearing something for yourself, and wearing what a patriarchal society has conditioned you to want to wear?

Continuing on the musician topic, Alexandra and Lenya discuss artists like Michael Jackson and others who have fallen from grace, and what to do with the art of “monstars”, or people who have been, or should be, canceled.

Friendship and Hope

I find it so compelling to hear you both sharing your personal stories and also feel grateful being a fly on the wall to your friendship with one another. The respect and love you have for one another comes across in your vulnerability, honesty, shared commitments to anti-racism work, and commitment to your friendship. Those elements feel like true forces against the negativity out there and it creates a space for me to be vulnerable and challenge my own thinking as I listen. Thank you!
