We sat down with Rana Salman, Co-Director of Combatants for Peace, and Ameera, Palestinian Co-Director at Tomorrow’s Women Leadership Programs for Young Palestinian and Israeli Women, two thoughtful and impressive women who are on the frontlines of efforts to raise awareness about the occupation and create a vision for peace. In this special episode, filmed in Beit Jalla in Area C of the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPT), in one of the few areas where Palestinians and Israelis can meet, Elana and Fakhira spoke with Rana and Ameera about their work, their experiences, their challenges to be involved in peace-building efforts, their beliefs about nonviolence, women’s contributions to peace, and their vision for a better future. Rana Salman is the Co-Director of Combatants for Peace, a Palestinian and Israeli grassroots activists’ movement that is committed to nonviolent action. She previously co-founded and served as the Director of Project Management for "Peace By Piece Tours", a travel company that offers educational and political tours in Israel and Palestine. Rana’s work focuses on building a just and lasting peace through dialogue, nonviolent resistance, and fostering mutual respect between Palestinians and Israelis. Ameera is currently the Palestinian Co-Director at Tomorrow’s Women, having embarked on her transformative journey as a participant in the organization’s flagship Young Leader (camp) program where she was introduced to the concept of compassionate listening at the age of 16. She became a certified Compassionate Listener in 2022, solidifying her commitment to fostering peace, freedom, and human rights. A devoted mother of three, Ameera is determined to instill in her children, and the young women whom she serves, the values of acceptance and respect that transcend religious and cultural boundaries. Her leadership at Tomorrow’s Women reflects a profound dedication to a future defined by compassion, understanding, and impactful positive change and is informed by the principles of compassionate listening she embraced during her formative years with the organization. In 2023 Ameera helped launch two distinct Tomorrow’s Women programs supporting Palestinian young women in becoming peacemakers: Herstory: An English and Public Speaking Certificate program and, for their sustained engagement, a community of practice designed to address barriers to peacemaking.
