The radical concept of educating for "Caring": Interview with Dr. Tammy Shel Aboudy

In this episode of Women Ending War, Elana and Fakhira interview Dr. Tammy Shel Aboudy, an expert in the philosophy of “caring” and how it can be used to build bridges and transform relationships and conflicts. Dr. Tammy Shel (Aboody) is a philosopher of education, studies and applies caring as a pedagogy, therapy, and an approach to addressing conflicts in relationships. She earned her Ph.D. in Philosophy of Education from UCLA. She integrates cultural and gender perspectives in her research. She has been studying the concept of caring as a fundamental approach to relationships and conflicts. She employs a holistic approach by integrating philosophy with ethnography (ethnophilosophy) as a research methodology and pedagogy. In addition, she extends the application of ethnophilosophy to therapy and conflict resolution. A few years ago, she also got a degree in social work due to her work with population at risk and underprivileged communities. She has been teaching at Max Stern Yezreel Valley College in the departments of education and nursing since 2012. 4. A conversation in the Occupied Palestinian Territories with Rana Salman of Combatants for Peace and Ameera of Tomorrow’s Women

    EPISODE 6

A conversation in the Occupied Palestinian Territories with Rana Salman of Combatants for Peace and Ameera of Tomorrow’s Women

We sat down with Rana Salman, Co-Director of Combatants for Peace, and Ameera, Palestinian Co-Director at Tomorrow’s Women Leadership Programs for Young Palestinian and Israeli Women, two thoughtful and impressive women who are on the frontlines of efforts to raise awareness about the occupation and create a vision for peace. In this special episode, filmed in Beit Jalla in Area C of the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPT), in one of the few areas where Palestinians and Israelis can meet, Elana and Fakhira spoke with Rana and Ameera about their work, their experiences, their challenges to be involved in peace-building efforts, their beliefs about nonviolence, women’s contributions to peace, and their vision for a better future. Rana Salman is the Co-Director of Combatants for Peace, a Palestinian and Israeli grassroots activists’ movement that is committed to nonviolent action. She previously co-founded and served as the Director of Project Management for "Peace By Piece Tours", a travel company that offers educational and political tours in Israel and Palestine. Rana’s work focuses on building a just and lasting peace through dialogue, nonviolent resistance, and fostering mutual respect between Palestinians and Israelis. Ameera is currently the Palestinian Co-Director at Tomorrow’s Women, having embarked on her transformative journey as a participant in the organization’s flagship Young Leader (camp) program where she was introduced to the concept of compassionate listening at the age of 16. She became a certified Compassionate Listener in 2022, solidifying her commitment to fostering peace, freedom, and human rights. A devoted mother of three, Ameera is determined to instill in her children, and the young women whom she serves, the values of acceptance and respect that transcend religious and cultural boundaries. Her leadership at Tomorrow’s Women reflects a profound dedication to a future defined by compassion, understanding, and impactful positive change and is informed by the principles of compassionate listening she embraced during her formative years with the organization. In 2023 Ameera helped launch two distinct Tomorrow’s Women programs supporting Palestinian young women in becoming peacemakers: Herstory: An English and Public Speaking Certificate program and, for their sustained engagement, a community of practice designed to address barriers to peacemaking. EPISODE 7

Do Israelis actually support the war in Gaza? A conversation with Dr. Dahlia Scheindlin

Amid the current reality in Israel, we have a lot of questions. The backdrop is like this: The Netanyahu government is forging ahead with war on multiple fronts and no sign of letting up, Bibi Netanyahu is accused of purposefully sabotaging hostage negotiations and refusing to consider ending the war, and government officials support radical religious ideologies and plans to Judaize Gaza and build new settlements over the ashes of the Palestinian people. This is harsh. Yet, is this really what Israelis want? Do Israelis actually support the war in Gaza? We asked Dr. Dahlia Scheindlin, leading public opinion researcher and political analyst in Israel, Haaretz columnist and author of The Crooked Timber of Democracy in Israel: Promise Unfulfilled. Her responses were riveting, revealing widening gaps between the government actions and the will of the people. Dr. Scheindlin's informed analysis sheds light on the depths of dysfunction behind the government’s actions, and offers a path forward for bringing a different reality.
