PAN'S LABYRINTH: Episode 133: Where There are No Lies or Pain

PAN'S LABYRINTH: Episode 133: Where There are No Lies or Pain

    WoHos!!

We talked so much about MEN that we had to break the pods into two parts. Although we make some passing references to MEN, this podcast is about Guillermo del Toro's 2006 classic, PAN'S LABYRINTH.

    Shout out to https://www.theotherfolk.blog/dissections/pans-labyrinth

I will have the podcast about MEN out soon. Stay tuned, also, for my chat with filmmaker Stefan MacDonald, who came on to talk THE EDGE and ALLIGATOR.

Fair warning, we go into a tangent about 45 minutes in.

Thanks for all your support! It means the World of Horror™ to us!

THE SLUMBER PARTY MASSACRE (1982) & ANATOMIE/ANATOMY: Episode 132: Kim in the Fridge: Slashers!

    WoHos!!

We return to slashers and look at THE SLUMBER PARTY MASSACRE from 1982 and ANATOMIE/ANATOMY from Germany. One of these might be called feminist and one of these...would not.

Mac and I had a great ol' ramble about springtime, the myth of expertise, sleepovers, pretty privilege, and wasted opportunities.

We hope you enjoy the show! If so, please tell all your friends all about us, download all our back eps, adopt a kitty, or call your mom. Or if you don't want to talk to your mom, call me! (336-338-8665)

Next time we will be discussing films involving magical realism with PAN'S LABYRINTH from Spain & MEN from the US.

Remember, WoHos! We love you & DON'T go into the basement!!

FARGO: Episode 131: Prowler Needs a Jump: Bonus Quinniside with Quinn McLaughlin

FARGO: Episode 131: Prowler Needs a Jump: Bonus Quinniside with Quinn McLaughlin

    Hey there, Q-Balls and WoHos!

Quinn was nice enough to join me for a ramble about one of my favorite movies of all time: FARGO.

Our conversation assumes a knowledge of the film. If you haven't seen it, please do yourself a favor and watch it or rewatch it!!

From Wikipedia: Fargo is a 1996 black comedy crime film written, directed and produced by Joel and Ethan Coen. Frances McDormand stars as Marge Gunderson, a pregnant Minnesota police chief investigating a triple homicide that takes place after a desperate car salesman (William H. Macy) hires two criminals (Steve Buscemi and Peter Stormare) to kidnap his wife in order to extort a hefty ransom from her wealthy father (Harve Presnell). The film was an American and British co-production.

Next time on the Quinnisode, we will be looking at SILENCE OF THE LAMBS.
Next time on the main show, Mac & I will be looking at two SLASHERS: THE SLUMBER PARTY MASSACRE (1982) from the US & ANATOMIE/ANATOMY (2000) from Germany.

JACOB's LADDER (1990) & THE BABADOOK: Episode 130: Movies about Mental Illness

JACOB's LADDER (1990) & THE BABADOOK: Episode 130: Movies about Mental Illness

    WoHos!
This week Mac & I discussed two movies about mental illness: JACOB's LADDER from the US and THE BABADOOK from Australia.

Mac was too smart for JACOB's LADDER, but he did think it was beautiful. Mom was profoundly wrecked by THE BABADOOK.

Next time, we are back to slashers with THE SLUMBER PARTY MASSACRE from the US & FLASHBACK from Germany.

Thanks for all your support! Please tell all your friends all about us!
We love you, WoHos and DON'T go into the basement!!

THE CLOVEHITCH KILLER & THE INNOCENTS: Episode 129: If You Can Hear Me, I Love You

THE CLOVEHITCH KILLER & THE INNOCENTS: Episode 129: If You Can Hear Me, I Love You

WoHos! The theme this time is "Loss of Innocence". We reviewed THE CLOVEHITCH KILLER from the US & THE INNOCENTS from Norway.

We enjoyed the exploration of the distance that grows between a child and parent during adolescence in THE CLOVEHITCH KILLER. Everyone can relate to that feeling, but thankfully only a few will ever know the horrifying reality our protag Tyler feels in THE CLOVEHITCH KILLER.

In THE INNOCENTS the inherent powerlessness is what is examined in a world where children suddenly discover they have spernatural powers. CW: Cat harm and cat death--also kid harm and kid death--also parent harm and parent death.

Also surprise spoiler for THE DEN at

We had a good discussion about some missteps the directors take, the use and misuse of does the dog die website, the depiction of a character with nonverbal autism and whether or not this depiction was problematic,

Mac, Quinn, and I have all been sick this season. It's Q's turn currently, but when she is better, we will do a Quinnisode on maybe my all-time favorite movie? FARGO.

Next on the main show we will be looking at movies involving mental illness with JACOB'S LADDER from the US & THE BABADOOK from Australia.

If you are enjoying the show, please get in touch and tell all your friends all about us.

    Stay healthy, our WoHos!
And remember: We love you and DON'T go into the basement!!

MAY: Episode 128: Embracing the Wrong with Ben and Rob from The Every Movie EVER! Podcast

MAY: Episode 128: Embracing the Wrong with Ben and Rob from The Every Movie EVER! Podcast

    WoHos!

This week, Rob and Ben from The Every Movie EVER! podcast joined us to discuss a movie that Means the World of Horror™ to them: MAY from 2002.

Topics discussed: Learning you are autistic and having it be no surprise to family members, podcasting as a mental health check-in, serendipity in finding movies, Netflix' old model for DVD through-the-mail service, watching horror at an inappropriately young age, the manic pixie dreamgirl/boy trope, surrealism and fantasy in film and how nice it is not to know what genre of film we are in.

Disclaimers for spoilers and adult language.

Mille grazie (I can be pretentious, too!) to Ben & Rob, who have a a delightful podcast which you should all check out. You should all also

Remember we love you and DON'T go into the basement!!

PS. I think I really misunderstood what Rob was saying that Blank was Frank from DONNIE DARKO. Also, I think Rob conflated THE CREEPING FLESH with TERROR TRAIN? But in the end, I think we were mostly sympatico through most of this pod, so what's a little muddle among friends?

PPS. I put a video version of the podcast up on our YouTube Channel. You can check it out if you want to see our beautiful faces.

    Next on the Quinnisode: FARGO
Next on the main show: Coming-of-age films: THE INNOCENTS from Norway and THE CLOVEHITCH KILLER from the US.

Getting emotionally scarred so you don’t have to!

The banter is fun, and the hosts are perceptive, so it’s fun hearing them catch things. Going over trivia and letterbox reviews is great, and guests are better (looking at you Quinn)
