Darkness (Write Guys #14)
In this episode, we get to meet Write Guys alumnus Anna-Marie Hamilton, a very familiar name on our show. This is our 4th graduate we will be interviewing for completing the Write Guys Curriculum (submitting 5 challenges in a row). We hear the first chapter of Micah's new story, "Nerd Squad," which he submitted to a fantasy writing challenge here. We read through all the personal limericks assigned in the Scott Orthey challenge last episode, and as always, the following challenge is announced at the very end! Welcome to Write Guys episode 13! Our topic this time is *POETICS* and we'll be talking all about creative ways to use words and language - the characteristics that determine the most immediate differences between written text and art. We'll read poems from last challenge, as well as some of our favorite examples of poetry and poetics in music and culture. Story Dev 3: Mise En Scène (Write Guys #12)
Welcome back to WRITE GUYS episode 12. We've missed you! In this episode, Ben and Micah discuss the storytelling/scene building concept known as MISE EN SCÉNE - and philosophize over techniques for controlling mood, tone, and setting the stage. Ben brings in a new iumi single "new england" for a LYRICAL DEEP DIVE (click here to listen along!). This is the 3rd and final installment in our 3 part "Story Development" episode series! Meaning we will also be reading through entries to the 3rd and final installment in our TRILOGY challenge series. Then at the end we intro next week's challenge, which is a completely new task that takes things in a very different direction. So basically like I was saying before PLAY it NOW. LOUD. I'm telling you to download this episode straight to your brain ASAP because there's just too much content and otherwise you'll never get through it and your happiness will turn to ash in your mouth when you realize that you didn't PLAY NOW fast enough or LOUD enough.

Story Dev: Part 2 (Write Guys #11)
Oops! This was crazy but we accidentally turned on our cameras and recorded a 4 hour podcast. Felt cute, might delete later. In this episode, Ben and Micah discuss early-stage story development/organization techniques, like the 3-Act Structure, and their views on planning/improvisation in storytelling. This leads into a segment called LIVE WRITE, where these 2 meatheads put pen to paper live on-camera and hammer out a draft of the opening scene from their nascent sci-fi/fantasy novella. What could go wrong? Lastly, we read submissions from the 2nd installment of our 3-part challenge series, and introduce the final challenge in that series, which will be due next Wednesday, 4/20.

Story Development

The market is saturated with creative writing podcasts. Some of them are even good. Write Guys stands above them all, dominating the genre. Here’s how:
1.) Write Guys is incredibly inclusive. The fearless hosts, Micah and Ben, are talented and experienced, while also remaining humble. They don’t talk down to their listeners as though they were all-knowing experts, but create a space where anyone from any writing level can participate, learn, and have a good time. The advice given is authentic and genuinely helpful.
2.) Write Guys has great audience engagement. Every episode has a helpful and rewarding writing challenge that listeners are invited to participate in. For example, one time listeners were given a prompt to write a brief excerpt of a story based on a single word. Every new episode, Micah and Ben share some of the best submissions. Further, once a listener has submitted enough times, they are eligible to be invited on the podcast and interviewed.
3.) Micah and Ben are the Write Guys, but they’re also the best guys. They’re completely genuine and oftentimes a riot. Listening to the podcast is like sitting down with good friends to talk about life and this hobby that we all love so much.
