You MUST be Treated! (Coerced Treatment and How to Overcome it‪)‬ LPP Podcast

    • Self-Improvement

WHY do people so often reject drug and alcohol treatment, let alone refusing to volunteer for it, so that American addiction treatment depends on the legal system to survive?  Stanton and Zach discuss the addiction treatment coercion phenomenon and imagine an alternative helping universe.

Coercion is central to the American addiction treatment enterprise. Without the participation of law enforcement and drug, criminal, civil and family courts (let alone EAPs, licensing bodies, and a host of NGO agencies) American addiction treatment would wither. Coercion is embedded in the disease concept of denial, and AA is forced on people in order to maintain their family rights, their jobs, their housing and often their liberty (which Stanton wrote the manual about with Charles Bufe and Archie Brodsky, Resisting 12 Step Coercion). Lately, Zach has been struck by how often people are forced into MAT. Stanton and Zach discuss how “helping” people requires that we respect and support their free choice and personal agency.
