You Must Remember This is a storytelling podcast exploring the secret and/or forgotten histories of Hollywood’s first century. It’s the brainchild and passion project of Karina Longworth (founder of Cinematical.com, former film critic for LA Weekly), who writes, narrates, records and edits each episode. It is a heavily-researched work of creative nonfiction: navigating through conflicting reports, mythology, and institutionalized spin, Karina tries to sort out what really happened behind the films, stars and scandals of the 20th century.

I can't believe this is free

The production/delivery are dreamlike, magical. The content is the calibre of a perfectly-written, expertly researched book (ok, short book) Best of all; Longworth manages to deliver a fresh take, a truly new perspective on the old Hollywood we love to love. Deep but bewitchingly entertaining. Finally, kudos to Longworth because it's always about the story, never about her.

Prententious and revisionist

Let's be honest. This is interesting stuff. But the accent is distracting and pretentious, and the conclusions are based on contemporary culture, not the culture of the time. Take it all with a grain of salt.

The paragraph above was my original review. Despite the issues, I’ve enjoyed the history in these podcasts. But this latest series on Song of the South demands comment. Too much opinion and too many snide remarks about conservatives. The whole culture, with a few notable exceptions, was racist, including the Democrats, during the Reagan and Bush administrations. This child was not alive at the time, so she’s repeating uninformed opinions instead of sticking to the facts. When someone attributes motives to another’s actions, you know they are giving an opinion, not a fact.

Pretzel-Twisted Series

Normally a HUGE fan, but not this time. Ms. Longworth whacks Disney, past & present... but didn’t her husband direct the last STAR WARS - for Disney?

The overblown and overreaching political opinions in this series get tedious quickly. Nixon, Reagan, Trump and all Republicans are somehow tied in with the racist “Song of the South”... Really Karina? You’re sure about that?

How about a nice in-depth series about the Warner Brothers contract players of the 30’s & 40’s? Tons of great movies, friends, enemies and relationships. (You don’t even have to include Ronald Reagan, if you aren’t near your Safe Space.)
