7 stars. Love it. Very informative entertaining, a bit like Car Talk for Jazz.

I am coming back to piano since early 2021 after being away from it for 20 years, this time focusing on jazz. I consider myself a beginner and am all over YouTube and podcasts to pick up as much as I can. Shout out to the New Jazz YouTube channel (Oliver Prehn) who first inspired me.

I came across this podcast by searching for jazz in Overcast, my podcast app. I love it. I would say it is more for intermediate and advanced, but by listening I gradually absorb concepts that I hope to eventually use and some I can use now. I also bought a couple of the Open Studio courses.

Besides having good information, Peter and Adam are very entertaining, a bit like Car Talk for Jazz.

Great Solos

I had an Interesting coincidence recently. I had just purchased tickets to see Inside Straight in Palm Springs when I heard about this podcast in another context. The first episode I listened to was the one on how to try to consistently play great solos and there couldn’t have been a set of more salient examples than the solos at the Inside Straight performance. One example that really stood out for me was Peter’s solo on Christian McBrides tune A Morning Story. After a monstrous solo by Warren Wolf, Peter followed with a beautiful solo. And it was such a gas that I had just listened to the podcast episode, as I was particularly sensitive to how Peter handled the transition and it was pretty transcendent. So in the middle of a night of amazing music I was able to really enjoy the added sensitivity provide by having listened. Great job guys and looking forward to more (though I’m also looking forward to the end of citrus season - I was feeling a little sticky :-)) !
