You'll Hear It

Big thanks to Adam & Peter for the fantastic podcast. I wound up here by following the breadcrumbs of your binge-worthy Instagram Reels. I love how those look and sound, and how inviting the mini-lessons are. Instruction with vibe? Nice! Anyway, the podcast episodes: I’ve been binging here too. I appreciate the joy you both bring to your conversations. That enthusiasm is infectious, and you’ve rekindled my love for jazz after many years listening to mostly indie-pop and folk. I only have one request: Could we get some more of those transcription episodes like the one Peter did about a Miles’ solo? I just listened to that one today while grocery shopping. Staring at cilantro and ice cream sandwiches is much more interesting while breaking down licks. (Sorry Peter, I mean phrases).

Adam and Peter are preeminent players, teachers…and dare I say Jazz musicologists. As of late, the Open Studio team has really stepped up the quality and production value of their video content - highlighting tightly shot explainers, detailed transcriptions and slick how-to’s. For general interest musicians, there’s also interesting crossover into gospel, blues, pop and soul. Major props for the Open Studio platform - the best resource out there for Jazz.

This is not a pedantic pod about esoteric music theory or historical minutiae like a cold documentary. These are two guys who just love tunes/artists and wanna share how they touched their soul or their development as musicians. This is about joy and reaching back to recapture why you even started playing or what kept you going when you wanted to quit. You won’t hear any bashing of artists here, just celebration and appreciation. It’s inspiring to hear people both humbled and invigorated by their influences. This pod just feels good, like the music they reference and revere. Great stuff!
