LDS International Temple Building: The Same Controversial Playbook?

LDS International Temple Building: The Same Controversial Playbook?

On this episode of Mormonish Podcast, Rebecca and Landon sit down with anthropologist Jason Palmer to discuss LDS temple building in Peru. Many of the same elements of the LDS church's playbook used in the United States to push a temple through city government in an area it is not zoned for, seem to be used on the international stage too,.
Jason is the author of the "Forever Familias: Race, Gender, and Indigeneity in Peruvian Mormonism," and shares his expertise with us as we shine a spotlight on two Peruvian LDS temples and the intricate process of governmental approval required to get them built. You might be pretty surprised by this conversation.

Latter Day Shame Culture: For the Strength of Youth

Latter Day Shame Culture: For the Strength of Youth

On this episode of Mormonish Podcast, Rebecca and Landon are joined by David Morris to dive into the history of the LDS church’s For The Strength of Youth Pamphlet.
Since the mid-1960s, this pamphlet has been given to young people in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints to guide their behavior and make sure they understand the dos and don’ts of growing up in the LDS church.
David has compiled visuals from these pamphlets, posters, pictures and more, throughout the decades to present us with a clear idea of what the purity culture themes were and how they have changed today.
We know you’ll find this episode nostalgic as we take you back through the pamphlets of your youth.

Tithing Debunked: We've Been Paying it Wrong All Along w/Aaron Brewster

Tithing Debunked: We've Been Paying it Wrong All Along w/Aaron Brewster

On this really important episode of Mormonish Podcast, Rebecca and Landon are joined by Aaron Brewster, a faithful Latter Day Saint, with experience in financial planning, accounting, and years of callings as ward clerk and executive secretary.
Aaron approached Mormonish with a really important topic he felt very strongly about sharing informaton on, tithing! In this episode, Aaron delves into the reasons everyone misunderstands tithing and how it should be paid, and all from a faithful perspective.
He clearly explains the financial trap that paying tithing the wrong way sets for families who are caught in an endless cycles of insolvancy. And he gives us strategies to pay tithing in the right way that is a win win for members and the church.
Even as post Mormons we have family members who pay tithing. This really infomative episode gives you faithful tools to help members and leaders of the church rethink tithing contributions in a completely faithful way.

The Haka; A Case of Cultural Appropriation by the LDS Church?

The Haka; A Case of Cultural Appropriation by the LDS Church?

On this episode of Mormonish Podcast, Rebecca and Landon are joined by Dr. Hemopereki Simon to discuss his recent article, "Rolling our eyes towards god: an intervention arising from Mormon missionary YouTube activity and the cultural (mis)appropriation of haka."
Dr. Simon discusses the haka’s cultural background and many ways in which it is culturally appropriated.
He specifically explores the (mis)appropriation of haka by a group of Latter-day Saint missionaries in Wangarratta, Australia, who wrote and performed an English-language haka that can be viewed as violent and offensive to those who understand the true significance of the haka.
We also discuss the LDS church and white patriarchal salvation, framed by the use of the haka by white LDS missionaries.
This is very interesting topic and we're very glad that Dr. Simon was able to join us for an episode of Mormonish.
