Pouring over the 2021 Critics Choice TV Nominations

We’re back in the television world as the Critics Choice Association revealed their nominations for the 2021 TV season. HBO’s Succession led the pack with eight nominations followed by limited series Mare of Easttown and Paramount+ series Evil, both with five nominations each. Aside from obvious homework where Evil is concerned, we dive into the nominees – a hybrid of last year’s Emmy eligibility and this year’s. Are there any surprises? Do these nominations forecast any new series that could fare well at next year’s Emmy Awards?

Water, Cooler, and ‘House of Gucci’

Water, Cooler, and ‘House of Gucci’

The Water Cooler Gang snuck out of the house, bellies full with turkey, to see Ridley Scott’s fashion family drama House of Gucci. The film — starring Lady Gaga, Adam Driver, Jared Leto, Al Pacino, Salma Hayek, and Jeremy Irons — divided early screening audiences. Some praised its conversation with camp cinema. Others found it completely lacking in the camp department. Some loved Jared Leto. Others… did not. And most have uniformly praised Lady Gaga’s second major starring role. So where do we fall? We all weigh in on the film and its ultimate awards season chances.

Podcast: Jayne Houdyshell & Richard Jenkins On Erik and Deirdre’s Expectations for Thanksgiving for ‘The Humans’

Podcast: Jayne Houdyshell & Richard Jenkins On Erik and Deirdre’s Expectations for Thanksgiving for ‘The Humans’

It’s hard to believe that Erik and Deirdre Blake expected Thanksgiving to be so emotional this year.

As a married couple hiding truths from their children, Richard Jenkins and Jayne Houdyshell deliver masterful performances. Houdyshell originated her role on Broadway in 2016 but she was anxious to return to the role and bring new experiences and nuances to the role. Jenkins might be new to Karam’s world, but he brings his earthly humanity to yet another man watching his prospects and life slip away from him.

Both actors loved the rehearsal process, and you can see that familial bond onscreen. The Humans is one of the best ensembles of the year, and it’s thanks to performances from actors like Houdyshell and Jenkins.

    ‘Yellowjackets:’ What’s the Buzz? We’ll You What’s A-Happenin’

    ‘Yellowjackets:’ What’s the Buzz? We’ll You What’s A-Happenin’

Megan leads the Water Cooler Gang through a discussion of Showtime’s new survival drama Yellowjackets. Starring Melanie Lynskey, Christina Ricci, and Juliette Lewis, Yellowjackets splits its time between a flashback story about a soccer team struggling to survive after a deadly plane crash and a present-day story about those who survived. Did we mention there’s cannibalism? Don’t let that dissuade you though. Yellowjackets seems to be poised to give Showtime their buzziest (pun fully intended) title in years. Is this the next Lost? We dive into the series’ first three episodes and gauge its awards potential.

But first, we talk about current Oscar frontrunner Belfast, which has charmed thousands seeing it at film festivals across the world. Will Kenneth Branaugh’s family drama survive the run to the Dolby? We review the film and talk about its awards season potential.

Did We Find ‘Dune’ ‘Eternals’-ly Long? Find Out Before the Su-‘Spencer’ Kills You!

Did We Find ‘Dune’ ‘Eternals’-ly Long? Find Out Before the Su-‘Spencer’ Kills You!

It’s (mostly) all movies this week as Megan, Joey, and Clarence revisit three buzzy fall film titles. First up, what do Joey and Clarence think about Chloe Zhao’s Eternals? Plus, what’s really behind that extremely low Rotten Tomatoes score? Then, we’ve finally all seen Denis Villeneuve’s Dune. Did the Water Cooler Gang absorb the spice saga? And is it really a massive Oscar player? Finally, Pablo Larrain’s Spencer boasts a possibly career-best performance from star Kristen Stewart, but what about the film itself? Is this an actress only Oscar play? Or will the Academy recognize the film as well?
