Andy's KSL-TV #WhatToWatch: ‘Young Woman and the Sea’ is a Daisy Ridley film the whole family can enjoy

Andy Farnsworth joins KSL-TV to help audiences decipher #WhatToWatch for the weekend of May 31, 2024. “Young Woman and the Sea” is a Daisy Ridley film the whole family can enjoy together, while  "Ezra" is just as emotional but for a more grown-up audience. It’s about parents trying to raise their autistic son and not mess him up with their own issues. A message most parents can relate to.  Also in theaters is "Summer Camp," a movie with three talented older actresses try and show they can be just as crude as the boys. It’s a problematic comedy that’s just not funny.

If you remember having a MoviePass subscription drama, check out "MoviePass, MovieCrash" streaming on HBO.  It's a documentary about the rise and fall of the "any movie, any theater, any day" subscription service that burned so brightly, but burned out so quickly.

The brains behind Fan Effect are connoisseurs of categories surpassing nerdy with a goal to publish a weekly "What to Watch on the Weekend" minisodes, taken from KSL-TV's Friday segment, and two deep-dives a month on shows, creative works, artists, local events, and other fandom topics.

Andy's KSL-TV #WhatToWatch: This Memorial Day weekend, it’s ‘Garfield’ vs. ‘Furiosa’

Andy Farnsworth joins KSL-TV to help audiences decipher #WhatToWatch for the Memorial Day weekend, May 24, 2024. For the weekend, we have unlikely contenders battling it out for box office glory, “The Garfield Movie" vs. "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga." These two wildly different movies are targeted at very different audiences, who both should enjoy them. Over on streaming, Jennifer Lopez is back in the sci-fi action with  "Atlas" on Netflix. And on DisneyPlus, there is a new documentary that should start your summer off on a good note with "The Beach Boys," about the iconic band.

The imaginative movie “IF” misses the mark with Rachel Wagner

The imaginative movie “IF” misses the mark with Rachel Wagner

Today, we deep dive into the imaginative world of Imaginary Friends in the movie “IF.” One of the most anticipated (and advertised) movies of the summer. And while we had big expectations for this family film, our guest reviewer, Rachel Wagner, said it best in her review “‘IF’ Oddly Lacks Imagination, And I Promise I’m A Nice Person.” She is joined by producer KellieAnn to break down the rights and wrongs of the ‘mostly enjoyable’ film.

Rachel’s content can be found at RachelsReviews.net, and if you like Hallmark movies, check out her Hallmarkies podcast. For Andy Farnsworth's KSL Movie Show review of “IF,” check out that episode’s podcast.

Exploring the ‘Doctor Who’ universe with Becky Bruce and Heather Kelly

Today, Fan Effect explores “What’s your favorite fandom?” with KSL Newsradio's Becky Bruce and Heather Kelly. With the TARDIS launching a new “Doctor Who” on DisneyPlus in May 2024, it's the perfect time to explore The Doctor’s 60-year-plus history, where to start watching, and what you need to know to start your journey as a Whovian. Or, if you are already familiar with this fandom, how can you get others into it?

While we minimize spoilers, producer KellieAnn was instructed to watch the following episodes in this order before recording, which offered a great way to enter the fandom: "Blink", “Christmas Invasion,” “The Girl in the Fireplace,” and “The Unquiet Dead.”

Andy's KSL-TV #WhatToWatch: ‘Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes’ has outstanding visuals and a surprisingly engaging story

Andy Farnsworth joins KSL-TV to help audiences decipher #WhatToWatch for the weekend of May 10, 2024. The latest adaptation of the Planet of the Apes movie saga, “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” has outstanding visuals and a surprisingly engaging story. (Check out Steve Salles review here!)  The best thing Andy watched this week was "Nowhere Special," a movie about a terminally ill single father in Ireland who is forced to interview potential adoptive families for his 4-year-old son to live with after he passes. With limited showings at the Megaplex Jordan Commons and the Broadway Centre Cinemas, it's worth the effort to catch a showing.

For streaming, there's a series on AppleTVPlus called "Dark Matter" is an interesting sci-fi tale: A physicist gets mugged one night, and when he wakes up, nothing in his life is like it was just hours before. And Mother of the Bride" on Netflix poorly-cast Brooke Shields as a brides mother dealing with an awkward situation.
