'His First Flight' by Liam O'Flaherty is a very moving and inspiring story of a young seagull, who is left alone on the ledge by his family because he is afraid to fly. He is scolded and threatened of being starved by his parents but still, he can not gather the courage to fly like his other family members. When his mother comes to him with a piece of fish in her beak and stops shortly opposite him, he dives at the fish and gradually sheds his fear and starts flying. He enjoys flying and his entire family praises him and offers his food to his delight.



His First Flight Summary
The young seagull is afraid to fly despite the scolds and threats of his parents. His two brothers and his sister had shorter wings, yet they had started flying. He felt certain that his wings would never support him. So his family members left him alone on the ledge. He had been seeing his parents flying around with his brothers and sister helping them in perfecting the art of flight. They were taught how to skim the waves and how to dive for fish. every morning the whole family had walked around on the big plateau and taunting him for his cowardice.

The sun was shining on his ledge that faced the south. He felt the heat because he had not eaten since the previous nightfall. He stepped slowly out to the brink on the ledge and tried to attract the attention of his family members by standing on one leg and closing his eyes. But they took no notice of him. Only his mother was looking at him. She was tearing at a piece of fish. The sight of the food enraged him.

The young seagull cried begging his mother to bring him some food. His mother picked up a piece of fish and flew across to him with it. He uttered a joyful scream to see his mother. But after coming near to him, she halted opposite to him with the piece of fish in her beak almost within the reach of his beak. He waited a moment in surprise, wondering why she did not come nearer, and then “enraged by hunger, he dived at the fish". With a loud scream, he fell outwards and downwards into space. His mother had swooped upwards. He felt his wings spread outwards. He could feel the tips of his wings cutting through the air.

He was soaring gradually downwards and outwards. He was no longer afraid. He soared upwards and uttered a joyous scream. His family was also flying around him.

Being tired due to flying and weak with hunger, he dropped his legs to stand on the green sea. His parents, his brothers, and his sister had already landed on the sea and they were beckoning to him in a shrill voice.

His legs sank into the water. He screamed with fright and attempted to rise again flapping his wings. Then he started floating on the surface of the sea. His family members were screaming, praising him, and offering him food.
