    Thanks Nachum!
Straight ahead on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, we near the end of the 2024 Spring sports year, and have crowned most of our indoor champions in the process. Boys Volleyball, Girls Hockey and Boys and Girls Varsity Soccer have reached their conclusion and the remaining sports are right behind them. All that and more, good morning, I'm Elliot Weiselberg.
We'll start out in Soccer where the Ma'ayanot Rapids pull off the upset and stifle the dominance of the defending champions. The Rapids edged Frisch 2-1 not only ending Frisch's chance at a repeat, but also puts an end to Frisch's 21 game win streak, with their last loss coming almost 2 years to the day in the 2022 semifinals. The win marks Ma'ayanot's first championship since 2019 and their 4th in the last 10 years.
Moving over to Boys Soccer where Kushner Cobras are kings for the first time in 7 years following their 3-1 victory over Ramaz. The battle between the 3rd and 4th seeds in the West proved to be a classic but Ramaz could not muster enough offense to keep pace with the champions.
We now leave the world of surprises and experience a bit of Déjà vu. A year ago, the Frisch Cougars found themselves locked in a heated overtime battle with SAR when Emma Hornblass tallied the championship winner to put Frisch back on top of the hockey world 1-0. This year, it would be Ramaz and it wouldn't take overtime, but a second period goal by Hornblass would prove to be the difference in a 1-0 final while Sophomore goalie Lily Acton posted her 8th straight shutout periods in the finals, capping off a season where the Cougars yielded only three goals. Frisch has now gone back to back for the first time since 2014-2016 in a playoff season where all games in the knockout rounds were determined by a single goal.
While the Ramaz girls could not break through, the Rams varsity volleyball squad put a capper on their perfect season sweeping SAR in straight sets by identical scores of 21-13. The crown puts a no-doubter on likely the most dominant performance in boys volleyball history, with the Rams demolishing opponents 27 sets to 1 over the course of the season. Their only dropped set, the third set of their regular season contest with the Sting. Ramaz wins their 2nd in a row their 3rd in 4 finals and account for more than half the championships in the last decade.
Heading outdoors, Darchai has punched their ticket back to the varsity softball championships. The 2021 winners defeated YDE to return to the finals where they await the winner of this Sunday's contest between Netzach Hatorah and defending champion Hillel. In Girls Varsity, there will be a new champion as the Bruriah Lightning shut out the defending champion Frisch Cougars 1-0 to advance to the championship. They'll face Ma'ayanot who outlasted Hillel 13-9.
Finally, it'll be the top 2 teams in the West fighting for the title in Baseball. Top seed Frisch doubled up Heschel 4-2 while SAR drilled Kushner 8-0. This will set up a repeat of last year's final and give Frisch its chance at winning its third banner in a row.
And that was your Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, Chag Sameah everyone, I'm Elliot Weiselberg.

Straight ahead on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, Ramaz looks to Ram through several finals, upsets litter the knockout stages in all sports and mostly familiar names find their way through on the diamond. All that and more, good morning, I'm Elliot Weiselberg.
We open serve on today's update with Boys Volleyball, where we have an upset on the way to the finals. Two days after knocking off HAFTR in straight sets in the quarterfinals, the SAR Sting upend the East top seed Flatbush Falcons in straight sets, 21-13, 14 and 16 to advance to their third straight final where they will meet up with the winner of TABC and the season's freight train, Ramaz in their contest on Wednesday night. Should Ramaz win, it would set up a rematch of last year's final and would also pit Ramaz against the last team to hand them a defeat.
Moving over to soccer where the upsets continue. Within a matter of minutes of each other on Sunday night, Bergen County saw two surprise results as Ramaz knocked off TABC and Kushner upended Frisch, both by 4-3 margins. This will mark the first final that has not seen either TABC or Frisch compete since 2017 when the league was won by the Kushner Cobras. Over in Girls Varsity, the Cobras were not as fortunate, getting walloped by Frisch by the score of 8-0. The defending champions will now await the winner of tonight's contest between Heschel and Ma'ayanot to determine their last obstacle to a repeat.
Continuing with the Ramaz theme, the Rams will find themselves in another final, but not one that would have been anticipated a year ago. A 4-4 squad barely qualifying for the playoffs in 2023, Ramaz now finds themselves fighting for a Girls Hockey championship for the first time since 2019 following a 3-2 overtime win over East champion HAFTR. Standing in their way will be the defending champions, Frisch. The Cougars, 1-0 winners over SAR in last year's final, walked away with a victory by the same score last night to head back to the championship game.
Heading outdoors to the diamond, and Boys Softball where the favorites ruled the week. Top seed Hillel blanked TABC 4-0 and will advance to take on Netzach HaTorah, winner of the 4-5 contest over Heicher HaTorah by the same score. On the other side of the bracket, #2 Darchei Torah squeaked by HAFTR 8-7 but will move on to face YDE, winners of an easier contest, a 10-3 victory over MAY, ending the Eagles hopes of heading back to the finals.
Finally, in Baseball, a crushing defeat for the East top seed DRS Wildcats who were unable to keep the Kushner Cobras from steamrolling them 17-7. The 4-4 Cobras advance to the semis and will be joined by Frisch, 2-0 winners over TABC in the last route-4 rivalry matchup of the year, and Heschel, who doubled-up Hillel 6-3 to return to the semifinals and the SAR Sting, 10-0 winners over HAFTR last night. The Cobras are the only new face to the semifinals preventing a repeat of last year's final 4 by knocking out DRS.
Starting next week, we'll hand out hardware and begin the countdown to the wrap-up of the 2023-2024 Sports Year.

    Thanks Nachum!
We have reached the end of May, which signals the beginning of the end to the 2023-2024 school year. Straight ahead on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, a horrific week for teams East of NYC in soccer, familiar foes get set to meet up in girls varsity hockey and a dominating upset in girls softball. All that and more, good morning, I'm Elliot Weiselberg.
We'll start out in Varsity soccer, where it was a terrible week for the East, as neither Boys nor Girls soccer had a quarterfinal winner outside of the Western Conference. In Boys Varsity dominant wins by Frisch, Kushner and TABC eliminated HANC, North Shore and Rambam, respectively, and, in a major upset, West #4 seed Ramaz went into the Greenhouse and knocked off East champ DRS 4-3 to advance. The semifinals will see TABC host Ramaz this coming Sunday and Frisch and Kushner within the week.
The Frisch-Kushner contest will also occur between their female counterparts, as the Girls Varsity playoffs saw Frisch blank Central and Kushner dominate HAFTR. Much like in the Boys Varsity, a top HALB family team received a shocking upset as West #4 Heschel defeated East Champion SKA 6-5. They will now take on Ma'ayanot, who completed the West sweep defeating North Shore.
In Girls Hockey, the semifinals are set following SAR's 3-2 overtime win over Heschel. The Sting will now take on Frisch in a repeat of last year's championship, a 1-0 Double Overtime affair won by the Cougars. The two will vie for the chance to each bring home a 2nd banner in the last three years when the winner takes on the winner of Ramaz and HAFTR, taking place on Long Island this Friday afternoon.
Moving outdoors, softball has moved into the knockout stages as well. The 4 top seeds enter the postseason with a combined 3 losses between them and seem poised to compete for the crown, however, they will need to first get past their quarterfinal opponents. Top seed, undefeated Hillel will square off with 8th seed TABC on Friday with the winner taking on the winner of last night's "Torah Bowl" between Heichal HaTorah and Netzach Hatorah. On the other side #2 Darchei Torah will host Frisch and on Wednesday MAY will travel to Brooklyn to take on Central champion, #3 YDE.
And in Girls Softball, East top seed Central found themselves on the wrong side of a major shutout, losing 10-0 to West #4 Frisch. The Cougars, the defending champs will await the winner of West #2 Bruriah and East #3 Shulamith, meanwhile West champion Hillel hopes to avoid the same fate when they play HAFTR and HANC will host Ma'ayanot to round out the quarterfinals.

    YLS Update 05 14 2024

    YLS Update 05 14 2024

    Happy Yom Ha'atzmaut everyone!
It's Mid-May which means the continuation of the Spring sports season and a ramp up to the postseason. Straight ahead on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, Boys Soccer experiences a logjam while Girls Soccer becomes very clear, the top seed in Girls Varsity Hockey comes down to one night, and in Boys Volleyball, Ramaz suffers a loss...of sorts...Good morning, I'm Elliot Weiselberg.
We start out in boys volleyball where Ramaz is no longer perfect. No, the Rams are still undefeated, having knocked off SAR this past week to improve to 7-0 and clinch the Western Conference, however, the contest marks the first time this year that Ramaz has not swept a match. Ramaz cruised in the first 2 sets against the Sting before dropping the third set 21-15, ending a 22-set win streak dating back to the 2nd set of the finals last year, where they faced SAR. The Rams will now go from one matchup of undefeateds to another, as they face Flatbush tomorrow night where the winner will be the only remaining team without a loss on the season.
Moving over to Girls Hockey where two games this Wednesday night will set the playoff picture. Of the 6 teams heading to the post-season, five will be from the West, with 4 in action and the Western Conference championship on the line. Frisch and SAR will square off with the winner being crowned the top team in the West while, at the same time Ramaz and Ma'ayanot will face off where Ramaz will have the opportunity to jump into the 3rd seed with a win. The 2 seed will go to tiebreak between HAFTR, HANC and SKA as the East champion, with that team being the only East team in the postseason. Joining the 5 will be Heschel, who know that they will be on the road come the first round of the post-season, but will await the contests to know whether they will be the 5 or 6 seed.
In Boys Varsity soccer, the top seed in the East and West may come down to tiebreakers. In the East, North Shore and DRS sit tied at 13 points with a North Shore contest against HANC remaining. Should North Shore lose, the two teams would be deadlocked with their only matchup between them a 4-4 tie. Out in the West, it could be three teams who may sit at the top where TABC and Kushner are tied at 11 points, but Frisch sits right behind them at 10 points with 1 game in hand. Meanwhile, Girls Varsity soccer is having no such problems. The East and West have clear-cut winners as SKA and Frisch have gone through the year spotless. The only spot still up for grabs is the final playoff spot in the East, which will either go to North Shore or HANC. HAFTR, Central, Ma'ayanot, Kushner and Heschel have already locked up the remaining berths and await the postseason tournament.
And that was your Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, I'm Elliot Weiselberg.

    YLS Update 04 16 2024

    Thanks Nachum!
Straight ahead on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, Frisch continues their dominance on the hardball rubber, Flatbush soars into the conversation on the Volleyball board and Frisch hands Ma'ayanot their first loss of the season in Girls Soccer. All that and more, good morning, I'm Elliot Weiselberg.
We've covered every sport so far this Spring season, with the exception of Baseball. Thus far, the diamond has belonged to the defending champs and this week only served to widen the gap between Frisch, last year's runners up SAR and everyone else. The Cougars went 2-0 this past week, defeating Heschel and MTA by a combined 18-1 and are now 3-0, tied with SAR who took wins over Hillel and TABC themselves. The two teams are the only Western Conference squads without a blemish. DRS joins them at 3-0 in the East, but its clear that we are potentially headed for a championship rematch between two schools who have dominated the Spring over the last few years. Other scores from the diamond, Ramaz picks up their first win in a thriller 11-10 over JEC, TABC edges out MTA 2-1 in extra innings and DRS outlasts Flatbush 6-5.
Speaking of Frisch dominance, the Girls Varsity Soccer Cougars are looking to defend their crown as well, and to this point have stood up to all challenges, including defeating previously undefeated Ma'ayanot this past week, 4-1. The win was Frisch's third in the past 8 days, having also swept SAR in a home and home to improve to 5-0. The only other undefeated West, Kushner, has yet to really start their season, having only played 2 games, albeit two big wins over Bruriah and Na'aleh. They face SAR and Ramaz this week, in hopes of making a run at Frisch for a late season meetup atop the West. In other action, Central picks up their 4th win, edging out Flatbush 4-3, and Heschel picks up their 4th win with a dominant victory over Ramaz.
Finally, we take a peek back in on Boys Volleyball where Flatbush has joined Ramaz in standing out amongst the pack. The Falcons sit at 5-0 after knocking off previously undefeated HAFTR in 4 sets, as well as Magen David and Frisch in the last 8 days. Flatbush will have a chance to continue their road to the top tonight against 3-1 North Shore as they look to keep pace with Ramaz, who, at 6-0, still has yet to drop a set. The two are on a collision course for mid-May, right before the playoffs.
And that was your Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, I'm Elliot Weiselberg.
