Stories, Not Opinions, End Arguments - Wellbeing Wisdom Tiny Bites Podcast Wellbeing Wisdom Tiny Bites

    • Mental Health

Have you ever been in a spirited discussion where you and the other person were on opposite sides of the fence?

Whether the person you were talking with is a friend, acquaintance, co-worker, family member or complete stranger, this Tiny Bite is for you. It’s for you if you’ve never been in an argument, because someday you probably will be.

Ask questions. Listen. Be open to hearing their experiences about whatever it is you’re discussing.

Share yours when it’s your turn, and share experiences instead of opinions. People will listen to your stories about a topic, even when they disagree with your opinion. People won’t listen to your opinion if you’re not listening to their stories.

When you can share stories and ask questions, you show that you’re open to learning from the other person. When you can only share opinions, you may be perceived as a conversational bully.

Be teachable – that means being open to learning from people, even those who disagree with you.
