After 3 knee surgeries and losing all of my basketball scholarships, I became a walk-on for the Division I Butler Bulldogs. As a walk-on, I learned lessons that helped me earn a scholarship, be on 3 NCAA tournament teams, get accepted into medical school, and earn a spot in one of the most competitive fields of medicine, Orthopedic Surgery. Here you will find practical lessons and advice that give you hope, encouragement, and belief that you don't need anything more than what's inside of you to be and accomplish everything you have ever dreamed of.

"Wideman with the rebound who kicks it out to Lewis. Dawgs down by 2....Lewis brings it up with Bennett and Martin in the corners. 5 seconds left....Lewis with the drive in and kick out to Bennett for 3! It's up and GOOOOOOD!!! Dawgs win! Dawgs win!"

I wish I could tell you that was a real story. It wasn't. I spent more time on the sideline watching Kamar Baldwin hit game winners. But I used to dream that listening to Justin Bieber's song "Believe" on his Believe Deluxe album. Never heard it? Go listen to it before this episode. You'll be even more inspired. Sorry Shelbie (my wife), I had to tell them.

I have always been a dreamer. I have always had a clear vision and goal in mind of where I want to be, what I want to do, and how I want to do it. But putting those dreams into action has been more difficult. Having the courage to step outside of my comfort zone? No thank you. But I knew if I wanted to truly reach my potential and be all that I could be, I had to.

In this episode we are going to talk about dreaming. Not the dreaming that goes on while we sleep, but the dreams that are on our heart day in and day out. We'll discuss why that's a good thing and why you shouldn't be afraid to have those dreams. It's ok if they don't come true. My game winner at Butler never did, but let me tell you why because I learned to dream then, more of my dreams are coming true now. I want that same feeling for you.

    S1 E6: Fearful Series Part 3: Failure

    S1 E6: Fearful Series Part 3: Failure

Failure is probably my favorite topic to discuss. It's everywhere and anywhere, evident in my life and in yours. It can be our greatest friend or our greatest foe. When I lost my scholarships and became a walk-on at Butler, I thought of myself as a failure. This would define me for the rest of my life. I was wrong.

I spent 1,460 days as a walk-on never playing as much as I wanted. I watched 132 straight games from the bench. In some people's eyes, I was a failure. But the truth is I was far from that, and everything I have been able to accomplish is because of failure.

You'll learn in this episode how to failure can be your friend, and how it is the greatest tool to help you succeed. You are never a failure. I believe in you. I believe in your dreams. I believe in who you are and your ability. The best part about it? Neither one of us is ever failing, we are simply becoming all that we were created to be.

    S1 E5: Fearful Series Part 2: Opinions

    S1 E5: Fearful Series Part 2: Opinions

My opinion is......(you fill in the blank). That can be a scary statement, right? We have all been hurt or angry over an opinion someone gave about ourselves, someone, or something that we care about. With social media, political divide, struggling relationships, the opinion of someone else can be scary. It has been for me.

In the part 2 of our Fearful series, let's talk opinions. We're going to talk about 4 simple, practical ways to push through the fear of opinions and use them in a healthy way to our advantage. You'll hear me be a little more direct in my thoughts on opinions because this is something I have struggled with for years, and it wasn't until someone gave me a kick in the butt in my thinking that I was able to change. But I'm not perfect. Let's get better at this together.

By the way, in MY opinion, Justin Bieber is the greatest musician of my generation. Yep, I'm serious. I'll leave that there for your thoughts.

    S1 E4: Fearful Series Part 1: Overthinking

    S1 E4: Fearful Series Part 1: Overthinking

"Should I buy that new brand of coffee? What if it's too bitter? It's more expensive than my old one, would it be worth it? I really need to hurry and get out of the store, but I just don't know about this coffee. Should I? Will my husband like it? There's so much to consider!"

Ever had a conversation in your head like this? Where you spend minutes, hours, maybe even days ruminating on a thought or an action and it might've been perceived, or how it could've been said or done differently. I LOVE coffee, it's a big decision. But it shouldn't cause me to think as hard as that C+ in Calculus that I got. Yes, I told you that right. I hate Calculus, it'll be the death of me. Good thing orthopedic surgery doesn't require me to calculate derivatives.

In this episode we're diving into the first of 3 episodes in our series called Fearful. I chose 3 topics that have caused me the most fear over the years of my life, how they've set me back, and how I've been able to overcome them. We'll talk about how to simplify your overthinking and how to use that as an advantage to propel to accomplish that dream that's always been on your heart. Much of the information we'll discuss is from Jon Acuff's new book, Soundtracks, which I read and highly recommend you do too. You'll be glad you did.

    S1 E3: How Do I Walk-On Into Life?

    S1 E3: How Do I Walk-On Into Life?

Have you ever felt like you weren't able to make a positive impact on others, just because you weren't in a leadership position or held some fancy title?

As a walk-on at Butler, I felt just like that. As a student in medical school, I felt like that. Even now as a medical resident in orthopedic surgery I still feel like that at times. In this episode we talk about how it doesn't matter whether you're the custodian or the CEO, you still have the ability to make a lasting impact on others and improve the skills you already have to take yourself to the next level.

When you learn how to Walk-On into life, you'll be surprised at just how great you can actually be right where you are.

    S1 E2: What is a Walk-On Leader?

    S1 E2: What is a Walk-On Leader?

You've heard it before. Leaders are readers. But some of you are going to have a sigh of relief that we're not talking about reading today. I've just always thought that was pretty catchy and I do love to read actually.

This is a different take on leadership. It's about maximizing who you are so that you can help others achieve their own success. We're going to take a deep dive into the personal traits and characteristics that we need to have in order to positively impact people and leave a legacy that others are going to follow for years to come. Regardless of whether you've been a leader for 50 years or 5 days, these are timely and applicable lessons we can implement right now that will help us boost our potential for those around us.
