Filmi Ladies episode 93: Filmi Twins

Filmi Ladies episode 93: Filmi Twins

It's Beth ka Happy Budday! And to celebrate Gemini season, aka the sign of the twins, we decided to do a twin0centric episode (because really, what in the Manmohan Desai could be more Beth?)

We discuss Haseena Maan Jayegi (1968), Sharmeelee (1971), Ghazab (1982), Jeans (1998), and Duplicate (1998).

We also discuss the difference between actual twins vs doppelgangers.

Tell us your favorite twin movies!

Beth read out a bit of the good discussion of Jeans on Letterboxd but there's more! https://letterboxd.com/film/jeans/

Our dear friends at the Khandaan Podcast have, perhaps unwisely, asked both of us on to discuss twin movies! Pitu did Hello Brother https://youtu.be/TF1itiBCna4?si=adBBHvKj7fMm564e and Beth did Duplicate https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AaUkZpwjHZ4

Filmi Ladies episode 92: The Kapoors: Shashi

Filmi Ladies episode 92: The Kapoors: Shashi

This is our longest episode yet, and it had to be in order to give this often underappreciated Kapoor the respect he deserves. Masala, parallel, and international films: he did them all, and he did them all very well.

We also discuss the very important question of what ice cream flavor each of the first four Kapoors would be.

Films in focus this episode: The Householder, Jab Jab Phool Khile, Aa Gale Lag Ja, Suhaag,* Heat and Dust, and New Delhi Times.

    * Note: Beth misspoke about Rekha's line of work in this film. Please forgive! Rekha is, of course, excellent no matter what her role is.

Filmi Ladies episode 91: Superstars series 14: Shabana Azmi

Filmi Ladies episode 91: Superstars series 14: Shabana Azmi

What do we say about Shabana Azmi that hasn't been said before? Whether the movie is good, bad or ridiculous, she is always great!

We watched a whopping 7 films for this episode, some parallel, some masala and she was fab in every single one. Beth watched Ankur, Lorie, Lahu Ke Do Rang, and Khoon Ki Pukaar. Pitu watched Arth, Mandi, and Swami.

We discuss her nuanced acting, her emotional scenes, her restraint, innate dignity, her power to the people song from Parvarish, her chemistry with her co-stars, her beautiful hair, and her funny hat from Amar Akbar Anthony. 😁

What are your favorite Shabana Azmi films?

Filmi Ladies episode 90: The Kapoors: Shammi

Filmi Ladies episode 90: The Kapoors: Shammi

We discuss the second son of Prithviraj Kapoor - Shammi, a giant superstar who brought flamboyance, giddy delight and uninhibited, joyous dancing to Hindi cinema.

His career can be divided into two phases - his "hero" phase and his supporting actor phase where he played dad/cop/uncle or extremely skilled plastic surgeon.

We discuss Mem Sahib (1956), Tumsa Nahin Dekha (1957), Brahmachari (1968), and Bundal Baaz (1976).

What are your favorite Shammi Kapoor films?

Filmi Ladies episode 89: Laapataa Ladies

We discuss Kiran Rao's second directorial venture "Laapataa Ladies", a
film about two newlywed brides who are lost. We enjoyed this sweet,
witty and heartwarming tale a lot, and couldn't stop raving about the
    story, direction and performances.

Did you watch Laapataa Ladies? What did you think?

Filmi Ladies episode 88: The Kapoors: Raj

Filmi Ladies episode 88: The Kapoors: Raj

When you're talking about Indian movies, he's a cine qua non [note from editor: stop it]: Raj Kapoor (1924–1988). We look at Shree 420, Chori Chori, and Aah, with detours into Sangam, Mera Naam Joker, Bobby, Prem Rog, and, yes, Ram Tere Ganga Maili.

    • We love how his films always have ideas and messages, especially the socialist ones!

    • Why does Nargis's departure from his life seem to turn him into a dirty old man when he's behind the camera?

    • And why does he seem to go downhill in the color film era?

    • Do you prefer him as an actor or as a director - or are those inseparable concepts?

    • What's your favorite performance?

    • And what's your favorite song sequence in one of his directed projects?

    • If you want to watch the adorable musical performance at the end of Aah (though it's a bit spoiler-y), try this link https://youtu.be/jpkWkZ6Kf0Y?si=OzvIBrY0HZZw6qKS&t=7944 (start at 2:12:24 if it doesn't automatically).
