Old Fashioned Theology is a podcast by Daniel Carpenter and Ryan Boyd where we explore gospel themes while enjoying our ‘pour choice of the week’.
Our primary desire is to help our listeners process the gospel as well as its implications for our lives. The gospel is more than merely a means to salvation—it's a way of life. We therefore want to help ourselves and listeners alike think through and implement the gospel in our daily rhythms by talking about how it not only impacts but totally transforms all aspects of our lives, from the way we think about theology proper like justification and glory to more 'everyday' topics like community and work.
Our secondary desire is to share with you a bit of our fondness for alcohol, so we also incorporate our trademark 'pour choice of the week' in which we pour a glass of whiskey, bourbon, beer, etc., and briefly discuss it's history, flavor, and more before diving into our gospel theme of the week. When we first started talking about this podcast, we knew we wanted it to feel like a casual conversation among friends—because that's exactly what we are, friends.
And since we'd love to invite you into this conversation as well, go ahead and pour yourself a drink, sit back, and enjoy Old Fashioned Theology.

    Episode 21: Higher Love

    Episode 21: Higher Love

    Description
On this episode of Old Fashioned Theology, Daniel and Ryan explore the gospel theme of love while enjoying the Pour Choice of the Week, Michter's US*1 Small Batch Bourbon.

    Michter's US*1 Kentucky Straight Bourbon
    Timestamps
    Intro: 0:00
Pour Choice of the Week: 0:56
    Love: 11:42
    Farewell Toast: 34:25
    Scripture References
    1) John 3:16: "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life."
    2) 1 John 4:7-11: "Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love. In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him. In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another."
    3) Ephesians 3:14-19: "For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named, that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God."
    Misc.
    1) A.W. Tozer quote on love: "From God’s other known attributes we may learn much about His love. We can know, for instance, that because God is self-existent, His love had no beginning; because He is eternal, His love can have no end; because He is infinite, it has no limit; because He is holy, it is the quintessence of all spotless purity; because He is immense, His love is an incomprehensibly vast, bottomless, shoreless sea..."

    2) Deuteronomy 6:4: "Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one."
    3) Ephesians 2:14-16: "For he himself is our peace, who has made us both one and has broken down in his flesh the dividing wall of hostility by abolishing the law of commandments expressed in ordinances, that he might create in himself one new man in place of the two, so making peace, and might reconcile us both to God in one body through the cross, thereby killing the hostility."

Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. If in Christ we have hope in this life only, we are of all people most to be pitied."

    Scripture References
    1) Leviticus 23 (full chapter on 'The Feasts of the Lord')
    2) Isaiah 25:6-8: "On this mountain the LORD of hosts will make for all peoples a feast of rich food, a feast of well-aged wine, of rich food full of marrow, of aged wine well refined. And he will swallow up on this mountain the covering that is cast over all peoples, the veil that is spread over all nations. He will swallow up death forever; and the Lord GOD will wipe away tears from all faces, and the reproach of his people he will take away from all the earth, for the LORD has spoken."
    3) John 2:1-11"On the third day there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus also was invited to the wedding with his disciples. When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.” And Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does this have to do with me? My hour has not yet come.” His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” Now there were six stone water jars there for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water.” And they filled them up to the brim. And he said to them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the feast.” So they took it. When the master of the feast tasted the water now become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the master of the feast called the bridegroom and said to him, “Everyone serves the good wine first, and when people have drunk freely, then the poor wine. But you have kept the good wine until now.” This, the first of his signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee, and manifested his glory. And his disciples believed in him."
