We are Kay and Dimi and in this podcast we share our learnings as we sail from Cape Town, South Africa off to far horizons. We have never done anything like this before so this is all new for us. We switched from living in a house to living on a small sailboat and now are making our way around, in our own time. Get in touch with us via our blog or social media:https://svtropicaldawn.blog/https://www.instagram.com/svtropicaldawn/https://facebook.com/svtropicaldawnhttps://mas.to/@svtropicaldawnhttps://twitter.com/svtropicaldawn

    Expectations versus Reality

    Expectations versus Reality

In this week's episode of "Sailing Tropical Dawn" we talk about the difference between the expectations we had about sailing, cruising, yacht clubs and what the reality turns out to be. We also talk a bit about our experiences at Royal Cape Yacht Club, Walvis Bay Yacht Club and our time spent in Hout Bay.We mentioned the Cruising Documentary - Queen's Birthday Storm which you can view on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aa7KxGtUlAASorry for the drop in volume halfway trough, I hope it is still loud enough to hear what we are saying.Check out our blog at svtropicaldawn.blog and get in touch if you have any feedback, comments, opinion,

    Choices

    Choices

In this week’s episode of our Tropical Dawn Podcast we talk about choices. We have been thinking about the choice wether to continue our sailing journey across the South Atlantic towards Brazil and the Caribbean or to have a break from cruising and return to South Africa to see friends and family and to go to AfrikaBurn. We chatted about all this as well as our thoughts about Donald Crowhurst and his ill-fated participation in the 1968 Golden Globe race and how it all seems to come down to the choices you make as a sailer. The documentary is called “Deep Water” and is available on YouTube: Deep Water (2006) - The Golden Globe Race and Donald Crowhurst Documentary Link to the Golden Globe race currently underway: https://goldengloberace.com/Let us know what you think of this episode and what choices you are making wether cruising rated or other: https://svtropicaldawn.blog/contact/

    Calamities - Staying put

    Calamities - Staying put

The past week was quite eventful: we dragged anchor, we had to drop our anchor and retrieve it the next day, we went on an excursion on the dinghy and almost lost the dinghy, and we got a rope caught in the dinghy's prop. But we made it trough all that and are fine, and we have a new episode of our podcast to tell you about all these things. We both wrote blog posts about dragging anchor, here's Dimi's version and this is Kay's version.Links: we mentioned the Pelican point lodge, here is the link to their website: https://pelicanpointlodge.com/ Please get in touch and tell us what you think of our podcast or, if you have been in or if you can imagine being in the same situation, how did / would you react? https://svtropicaldawn.blog/contact/

    Andries/Eiitango Jetango (Lüderitz episode bonus)

Here is the full recording of the conversation we had with Andries/Eiitango Jetango, we had to edit it a bit because the Lüderitz episode of our podcast was getting to long. So here, as a bonus, the full, unedited conversation.

    Lüderitz

    Lüderitz

This episode of our Tropical Dawn podcast is about the town of Lüderitz in Namibia we sailed to in our little boat, our adventures there and some of the people we met there, including a recording of part of the conversation we had with Andries/Eiitango Jetango. We edited the recording of our conversation because this episode is already quite long but we'll upload the whole recording here as a bonus to the podcast episode. According to Wikipedia Lüderitz population in 2011 was 12,537 people, so indeed a small town. The languages Eiitango Jetango mentions are his mother tongue Oshiwambo and his favourite language Khoekhoegowab which are two of the official languages of Namibia.News article about the Khoi and San activists in South Africa I mentioned briefly. The book Eiitango Jetango talks about but cannot exactly remember the title of is The Souls of Black Folk by W.E.B. Du Bois. And the other one he mentions is The Celestine Prophecy by James Redfield.Content warning around 1 hours 13 minutes and 50 seconds some gruesome history, skip to 1h15m40s if this could trigger you, to avoid having to hear this, we’ve inserted a content warning in the recording so you you know where to skip forward. On the other hand, if you do want to know more about this part of Luderitz history, here’s a link to the Wikipedia article.
