The Pandemic is Still Reshaping Senior Care

The coronavirus pandemic has left lasting marks on lives and industries across the globe. One of the sectors hardest hit by the pandemic is senior care — nursing homes and other senior care facilities were already facing big challenges when the pandemic arrived and proved to be especially devastating to the elderly. Now, as systems work to recover, the state and federal regulations that govern senior care are beginning to change for good. In this episode of SKO Unmuted, host Adam Back is joined by veteran healthcare attorney Ben Fiechter and Lisa Biddle-Puffer, Director of Regulatory Affairs at the Kentucky Center for Assisted Living, to discuss which once-temporary policies are being made permanent, and what else is in store for the industry.

Can Kentucky Abolish Personal Income Tax? A look at the state’s 2022 tax reform

Can Kentucky Abolish Personal Income Tax? A look at the state’s 2022 tax reform

In this episode of SKO Unmuted, co-host Adam Back is joined by Commerce Lexington's Chief Policy Officer Andi Johnson and SKO member attorney Stephen Sherman to discuss the results of the radical tax changes proposed (and then passed after overturning a gubernatorial veto) in the 2022 legislative session. With these changes comes a multi-year plan that promises to abolish the state's income tax, a loss of state revenue offset by an expanded list of services that will now be subject to the state's 6% income tax.

Our guests discuss how a plan like this can play out, and who the ultimate winners and losers may be.

Chaos: The State of the NCAA’s Compensation Rules for Student Athletes After Alston

Chaos: The State of the NCAA’s Compensation Rules for Student Athletes After Alston

In this episode of SKO Unmuted, co-host Adam Back hosts a panel to explore this week’s U.S. Supreme Court decision NCAA v. Alston, which found that limitations to certain education-related compensation for student athletes is in violation of U.S. antitrust law. What does this mean for the future of how college athletes may be paid, or financially benefit from use of their own name, image and likeness?

To discuss, Adam is joined by Dr. Steve Parker — Associate Professor for sports leadership and teacher education, and Associate Dean for diversity, undergraduate advising and student success at the University of Kentucky — as well as SKO Attorney Danielle Day and SKO Managing Director Doug Barr. All three are former University of Kentucky athletes with particular interest and insight into the current state of student athlete compensation and how it may change due to the Alston decision.
