    Davidā€™s Prayer at Death

    Davidā€™s Prayer at Death

We are going through a series of case studies on prayer and spiritual encounters in the Bible. This great prayer, which comes at the very end of Davidā€™s life, gives us a fascinating message about the whole subject of spiritual encounters. The message is that giving ā€” or financial generosity ā€” is a key component in true spirituality and in a real spiritual encounter with God. This is what weā€™re going to see as we look at this passage and put it in the context of Davidā€™s whole life and, therefore, the rest of the book of 1 Chronicles.Ā

Weā€™ll see three things as we study the passage: 1) What David wanted for his people; 2) How David gave it to them: and 3) How we can have even more of it than they did.Ā

This sermon was preached by Dr. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on November 18, 2007. Series: Real Spirituality - Prayer and Beyond. Scripture: 1 Chronicles 29:6-20.

    Paulā€™s Prayer for Experience

    Paulā€™s Prayer for Experience

We are going through a series of case studies on prayer and spiritual encounters in the Bible. This message explores the greatest stack of model prayers in the New Testament ā€” all found in the epistles of Paul. Paulā€™s letters are filled with prayers, and they are probably the biggest single stash of prayers in the New Testament that will help us understand how to pray.Ā

The message of this particular prayer in Ephesians is that you should expect and seek profound, life-changing spiritual experiences of the love and joy of God. If we take a look and study the passage, weā€™re going to see: 1) Why we need it; 2) What that life-changing spiritual experience is; and 3) How to receive it.

This sermon was preached by Dr. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on November 11, 2007. Series: Real Spirituality - Prayer and Beyond. Scripture: Ephesians 3:14-21.

    Hemanā€™s Cry of Darkness

    Hemanā€™s Cry of Darkness

We are looking at a series of case studies on prayer and spiritual encounters in the Bible. This message is from the Psalms, which is the prayer book of the Bible. In the Psalms, there are many prayers by people who are suffering and who are asking God for help, asking God for rescue, for relief.

This is a psalm that ends without hope, and has ā€œdarknessā€ as its last word. What is a prayer like this doing in the Bible? There are four messages this psalm teaches us: 1) Spiritual and personal darkness can last a long time no matter what you do; 2) Times of darkness are often the best places to learn about Godā€™s grace; 3) Times of darkness can sometimes be the very best situation for you to grow into someone of greatness; and 4) Darkness can be relativized.

This sermon was preached by Dr. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on November 4, 2007. Series: Real Spirituality - Prayer and Beyond. Scripture: Psalm 88:1-2, 6-18.

    Mosesā€™ Prayer for God

    Mosesā€™ Prayer for God

We are looking at a series of case studies of prayer and spiritual encounters we find in the Bible. This message explores maybe one of the most famous and also one of the most astonishing prayers and answers in the Bible ā€” an encounter between God and Moses.Ā

Whatā€™s going on with this prayer? The answer is profound. We will examine 1) Mosesā€™ prayer for our glory; 2) Mosesā€™ prayer for Godā€™s glory; 3) Godā€™s answer to all of the prayers.

This sermon was preached by Dr. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on October 14, 2007. Series: Real Spirituality - Prayer and Beyond. Scripture: Exodus 33:12-23; 34:5-8.

    Jacobā€™s Prayer for Joy

    Jacobā€™s Prayer for Joy

Although prayer and spirituality are very popular in our culture, we will see that what the Bible thinks about spirituality and what modern people think about spirituality arenā€™t necessarily the same things at all.Ā

We are exploring Biblical case studies of people who had authentic and life-changing encounters with God. Todayā€™s message looks at what happened when Jacob encountered God. How do you know that you donā€™t just believe in God, but that youā€™ve actually met him? If you meet God, according to this text, 1) You must meet God alone; 2) You must meet God for blessing; and 3) You must meet God at the point of weakness.

This sermon was preached by Dr. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on October 7, 2007. Series: Real Spirituality - Prayer and Beyond. Scripture: Genesis 32:22-31.
