My new podcast 'Under The Skin' asks: what's beneath the surface - of people we admire, of the ideas that define our time, of the history we are told. Speaking with guests from the world of academia, popular culture and the arts, they'll help us to see the ulterior truth behind our constructed reality. And have a laugh.

#104 Science, Capitalism & God (with Neil deGrasse Tyson)

#104 Science, Capitalism & God (with Neil deGrasse Tyson)

This week’s guest on Under The Skin is the infamous astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson! He’s pretty amazing. He was promoting his book ‘Letters From An Astrophysicist’ but he was more than that…being a focused and dedicated educator. I enjoyed talking to him. The main thrust of it was me going, “yeah, come on, there must be God!”. It was actually my ongoing argument that it’s hard to apply the tools of science to realms that may be beyond sensory experience and how can science claim to be objective as it exist within a capitalist consumer culture that has certain agendas and objectives? We also discussed the way in which science has propelled human understanding and how we interface with the unknowable, what role ancient spiritual texts have played and whether science is controlled by the rich and powerful?
I hope you enjoy it as much as we did!

#85 Vulnerability and Power (with Brené Brown)

Brené Brown is the author of five #1 New York Times bestseller books, her TED talk has over 40 million views, making it one of the most viewed ever and she has new special on Netflix called “The Call To Courage”. She is an expert researcher in vulnerability, courage and shame. It’s one of my favourite conversations I think I’ve ever had. If it’s spiritual wisdom you want, listen to this episode with Brené Brown.

#78 Byron Katie - Free Your Self From Pain

Author and spiritual teacher Byron Katie is on the podcast this week. Byron Katie is the creator of “The Work” - a program that teaches you to free yourself from suffering. If you want to learn more about your role in relationships and confrontations, how to understand your negative thought patterns and how to train yourself to think clearly and without pain - give this a listen, Byron Katie is a fantastic teacher. We even do some of The Work during the podcast, where Katie helps me work through a recent resentment.

From Cape Town

Man it’s good to listen to someone who thinks about the deeper issues of life and question ideals with an open mind. I’ve been learning so much from you and your guests and value this podcast so much. My favourite discussions were talking with extremists, vulnerability with Brene and seeds and weeds with Jay. Soo good!!

Super Farking Radical

Just wow! Love this podcast. Never ever actually reviewed a podcast but this podcast needs to be heard by as many people as possible hence my reviewing with a 5 star.

Iv learnt so much and had my brain stretched to the max and I’m only on the 4th episode.

Can’t wait for the 80 odd more to come.

Thank you Russell Brand for your wisdom, humour and connecting us with the radically amazing humans you chat to.

Cheers

Some interesting ideas and guests, sadly stymied and drowned out by Brand

Really frustrating listening. Russell can’t just be still, and listen, even with the most interesting guests. I you like Brand just prating on about himself and the skewed hamster wheel of his hammy intellectualism meanders of fancy, then this is the podcast for you.
