Ep.12 Possibility, Education and Truly Being Proud to Be African with Sandra Chuma Africana Woman

    • Society & Culture

We all know that in Africa we have been sold the dream that the grass is greener on the other side. But is it really? We often complain about the images portrayed about Africans on the global stage; from the emaciated baby with a distended stomach and fly on the mouth to streets lined with garbage. Sadly, this tiny percent of the African story has been magnified to the status of an absolute and only truth. Sandra and I discussed how important it is for Africans to tell our own stories and more than that to embrace the numerous blessings of being and living in Africa. If you were to write down the positives and negatives of living in Africa on one sheet of paper, you would be surprised to see how the positives outway the negatives.

That said we have consumed decades long of marketing and PR campaigns by the western countries that has sent messages of unworthiness to Africans. They are not about to stop so it really is our responsibility as African citizens, as individuals to begin to change the narrative. To show the world the truth about where and how we live. To teach the younger generations all there is to be proud of and what to preserve.

Sandra Chuma is an entrepreneur, speaker, coach, podcast host, and award-winning documentary filmmaker. She is a proud Zimbabwean woman first and foremost. Sandra believes that our greatest responsibility is to share our stories so we can inspire and create possibility for others.

Sandra is the founder of Ndini, which is a platform focused on telling the often-untold stories of inspiring, trailblazing women of African descent. She is also the founder of WORTHY and Woman on Fire Summit, which are all brands with a mission to provide information, tools and community to help people find the beautiful and extraordinary in themselves.

“For many years I denied my Africaness. It was not something I shared with people.”

“That’s when I realised I had to come from way back here. And I was dishonouring the sacrifice of everybody who put into me.”

“Our young generation has to realise that there is nothing that will be handed to you on a silver platter”

“He (Her husband) recognises that as a woman I face unique challenges”

“I think the world is shifting… I think that we are at a crossroads… Where we have to question does it make sense for you to go into debt to get a degree.”

“Also as an employer we are shifting our focus from do you have a piece of paper from a university to more, you have experience. Tell me about that experience”

“You are infinite possibility. I think our greatest limits, our greatest prisons, exist in our minds.”
