49 – Free Hugs and the Advantage of Fear with Kemy Joseph

49 – Free Hugs and the Advantage of Fear with Kemy Joseph

Free Hugs?  I’m down!  What’s the Advantage of Fear?  In this episode, Kemy Joseph shares with us how difficult it was to simply offer a hug or a high five to a stranger.  With so much stress, confusion and panic in the world, there we attempt make life little more positive by examining our own actions and words.  So we try to be the change we want to see in the world.  That’s a pretty tall order, but to be honest, it’s the only real power we have to change how we interact with the world.  It can be easy to give into fear and not engage with your own behavior.  Or to be too afraid to make the changes you need to make to succeed in your efforts.

Fear is often said to be an acronym for “forget everything and run” or “false evidence appearing real” but those don’t feel helpful right now.  Those messages don’t empower you to actually help you with your business or save the dreams you’ve worked so hard to build.  They won’t even help you get free hugs.  What if you had a way to use your fears to your advantage instead? Join us and international speaker and coach, Kemy Joseph as he shares the simple and powerful ways we can channel our fear into creativity, service, and most of all, building community around an inspiring future.

    Fear as Motivation

    Fear as Motivation

Using Fear as Motivation is super relevant in 2020.  Way back in the before times, April of 2020, Brian and Cory recorded this episode and nearly lost it to time and poor file management.  The Doom duo discuss starting your dream project and how using fear as a motivating force helps them to grow and be better versions of themselves.  Cory shares the story of how children's book author Kate DiCamillo told him to give up on the idea of success and to learn to love the fight rather than the victory.  Brian tells us to use your super power and to stop waiting for inspiration and motivation.  They are fickle creatures after all and won't come if you call them unless they have been well trained.

In this episode we find out that Brian is a morning person and Cory think's he's a quitter for going to bed in the same day he woke up.  Using fear as motivation helps you to start your dream project, to grow, and be a better versions of yourself.  Fear is natural.  In other words, it's something to learn from rather than something to run from.  Don't avoid it for the sake of comfort.  Failure is a teacher, don't be afraid of it.  Don't be attached to success.  You can do this!

47 – Training Your Dog Brain with Kate Godfrey

47 – Training Your Dog Brain with Kate Godfrey

Sit! Speak! Stay a while and listen!  Dog training is more about training the human than the dog. The founder of Comprehensive Canine Training teaches Mindfulness of Doom how to Train Your Dog Brain.  No really.  Kate Godfrey is a dog training professional who uses force free training techniques to teach humans how to be better dog owners and better people!  We discuss how useful dog training is for dealing with people, how compassion plays a leading role in relationships, and no matter how trained you are, your family is just… well they are family.  There is training for your dog brain, but other peoples dog brains might need treats to guide them towards better behaviors.  Kate quips that the only thing two trainers can agree on is what the third trainer is doing wrong.  The conversation takes several turns from whether or not dogs have Buddha nature, dog emotions, cranking and yanking, oppositional reflex, and even fear of success.   I mean, this IS Mindfulness of Doom, of course we talk about the dread of failure and the doubts of our guests.  Kate did a wonderful job, and we feel like we were trained into being better versions of ourselves just by being in her presence.  She uses science based training In Jacksonville, Florida and is FearFree Certified  a CATCH Mentor Trainer, a member of PPG, APDT, and IAABC and all the acronyms.  Get free Dog Training lessons on Kate’s Instagram!  Follow her at @comprehensivecaninetrainingFind Kate at www.comprehensivecaninetraining.com Support us with a Monetary Contribution: http://www.patreon.com/mindfulnessofdoomRead the Blog: http://mindfulnessofdoom.com/blog/ Instagram: @mindfuldoom

46 – In the Wake of Loss

46 – In the Wake of Loss

How do we stay mindful in the wake of loss?  In this episode we hosted an Instagram Live call to allow for our listeners to ask their questions about loss and grief and mindfulness in general.  Mindfulness of Doom recently lost a friend to gun violence and we wanted to try to share some of our stories about loss.  How we find comfort in loss is in togetherness and community, however ineffectual it may be we wanted to add our voice to that community.  Though we often joke around about death, doom and mortality, we grieve too.  Comfort in the face of uncertainty is all we can really do for each other during trying times.  Brian and I both think that religion at its best is doing just that, trying to give comfort in the face of uncertainty.

A familiar face at Brian’s Tea at the Cottage events, Gonzalo Vizcardo was a a strong personality, an activist, and a friend.  Sadly he lost his life.  We can’t do anything to change the past, but we can remember to be better in the wake of loss.   Read more about Gonzalo’s life here:  Miami-Dade Democratic leader, activist, intellectual dies at 29

Nobody knows you better than you do.  Practicing self-referral is a skill that can help you in difficult times.  As Brian teaches in this podcast, it’s extremely helpful to trust yourself enough to experience your emotions.  Let them play out.   Listen to them, and let them go.  After that, it’s important to share with others.  It’s crazy how thoughts and feelings take on a whole new dimension when they are spoken out loud.

Take care of yourselves out there.  Take care of each other.  Enjoy the time you have when you have it because we’re all going to die.  Let’s drop the small talk and get to the important things in life.

    45 – Lost In Existence

    45 – Lost In Existence

The Doom Duo is back and this month Brian and Cory are discussing being lost in existence!  This episode was recorded from an Instagram Live call from Brian’s Inner Sensei series talking to teachers, practitioners, and students about how to live their best lives.  Cory and Brian catch up after a long hiatus and open up about their own experiences with feeling lost in existence.  Their respective paths are fairly different and Cory breaks down the differences between the sudden and the gradual realization of change in ones’s life.

Brian shares how his experiences in the architecture field, designing cities that would replace forests and native species, left him dissatisfied and seeking a different path.  A traumatic accident where Brian was struck by a Lexus while riding his bike was a sudden wake up call for Brian.  His path to becoming a mindfulness teacher had a sudden and apparent moment of tangentcy.

Cory opens up about his cycles of existentialism and doubt and how those cycles helped to gradually prepare him to help others who struggle in the same way.  Learning to accept who you are, and not attach your self worth to your social status is a long and gradual path towards understanding.  Having a story that guides your progress is helpful, its even more helpful to get help from those who’ve walked a similar path.

Mindfulness of Doom is glad to be back and making dumb jokes and sharing what we have with you.  Thank you so much for two years of awesomeness. Happy 2nd Birthday Mindfulness of Doom!   It has been a wild ride and we can’t wait to see what comes next!  Enjoy Mindfulness of Doom! 044 – Brian’s Brain Ghosts with Rabbi Adam Gindea

044 – Brian’s Brain Ghosts with Rabbi Adam Gindea

What happens when Brain, Cory, and Rabbi Adam Gindea just talk?  Well, we ramble and drift from conversations about short term memory loss to spirituality, to the shortcomings of religion, to marriage, to video games, to hallucinations, to taking calls from our listeners, and seamfully segueing back into religious spirituality.  In this bonus episode of Mindfulness of Doom, we share with you the conversation behind the scenes.  This isn’t a full episode, but rather the continuation of the conversation from Episode 42 The Answer to Life the Universe and Everything with Rabbi Adam Gindea.  Brian Tells the story of what it was like to have short term memory loss, what it’s like to talk to ghosts, and expels the wisdom and virtue of never touching the bouncer at a club when you have a brain injury.  We haven’t released an episode in a while, uh… sorry about that.  Brian and Cory have been on various adventures across the globe and they plan to get back to regular episodes in the coming months.  Hopefully this will tide you over.  The first half is the story of Brian’s brain ghosts.  After that we get into conversations about various religions, monogamy, and life lessons we learned from video games.  Man this SEO gimmic still says I need 75 words to fill or it gives me a little red button saying I failed at life.  Tragic.  It would just make more sense to listen to the episode.Read the Blog: http://mindfulnessofdoom.com/blog/
