Public Land Etiquette: To Mess or Not to Mess with

we dive into a variety of topics, starting with a recap of my recent experience at TAC (Total Archery Challenge). Despite having a negative perception of TAC over the past couple of years, this recent event reminded me of its true essence and the fun it brings.

We discussed the high costs associated with TAC, including ticket prices and the potential loss of arrows, but also the excitement and camaraderie that come with it. We touched on the possibility of TAC expanding to two weekends in Michigan, which could help accommodate more participants.

Our conversation then shifted to the technical aspects of archery, including the use of different types of fletchings and the importance of tuning your bow. I shared my experiences with zingers and the inconsistencies I faced, emphasizing the need for proper equipment setup.

We also delved into the topic of trail cameras, comparing different brands and models. Matt shared his preferences for Tacticam Reveal and Moultrie Mobile Edge, highlighting their pros and cons. We discussed the importance of customer service and the reliability of these cameras in the field.

The episode wrapped up with a discussion on the ethics of using trail cameras on public land, the potential for conflicts among hunters, and the importance of respecting other people's equipment. We debated whether or not to check someone else's trail camera and the implications of doing so.

The Future of Hunting: Regulations, Social Media, and Out-of-State Adventures

The Future of Hunting: Regulations, Social Media, and Out-of-State Adventures

In this episode, I cover a variety of topics, starting with an update on my recent activities. I discuss the challenges of balancing family life with my passion for hunting and archery, especially with events like the Total Archery Challenge (TAC) coming up. If you're attending TAC, feel free to hit me up; I'll be around shooting and hanging out with various vendors like VPA and Latitude.

I also touch on some of the frustrations with the exclusivity and ticketing process for events like TAC, and the potential need for more accessible options. Additionally, I share my thoughts on the recent changes in hunting regulations, such as Iowa's new trail camera rules for public land, and how these changes might affect us.

On a lighter note, I recount a funny yet chaotic story involving a skunk, my dogs, and the aftermath of dealing with the skunk's spray. It's been a wild few weeks, to say the least!

Looking ahead, I'm contemplating my hunting plans for the fall, including the possibility of an out-of-state hunt. I'm also focusing on getting back into shape after a period of unhealthy eating habits due to a busy schedule.

Michigan Deer Management Initiative the Upper and Lower Peninsulas member Jordan Hoover and Bob Jones

Michigan Deer Management Initiative the Upper and Lower Peninsulas member Jordan Hoover and Bob Jones

We had a deep dive discussion with Jordan Hoover and Bob Jones from the Michigan Bowhunter Association about the Michigan DNR Deer Management Initiative.

Here are three key takeaways from this insightful episode:

Importance of Grassroots Input: The podcast guests highlighted the significance of including independent, unaffiliated individuals in decision-making processes related to deer management. This approach ensures a diverse range of perspectives and input, ultimately leading to more well-rounded decisions.

Challenges with Timelines: One major challenge discussed was the aggressive timeline set by the commission for the Deer Management Initiative. The short timeframe limited the depth of discussions and decision-making, emphasizing the need for adequate time to address complex issues effectively.

Stewardship and Education: The conversation also touched upon the importance of stewardship and education in hunting practices. It was noted that conscious harvest decisions and a focus on the benefit of the resource are crucial for sustainable deer management practices.

This episode provided valuable insights into the complexities of deer management and the need for a balanced approach that considers both the resource and the hunting community.

Michigan Turkey Season Opener: A Tale of Trials and Triumphs

Michigan Turkey Season Opener: A Tale of Trials and Triumphs

Welcome back to another episode of the Generations Hunt Podcast. In this episode, Matt and Joe dive deep into our turkey hunting experiences here in Michigan, sharing the highs and lows of our recent hunts.

The turkey season is in full swing, and we kicked off the episode discussing the current state of the season, with some areas just opening up for public land hunting.

Our hunting tales began with an opening day filled with excitement and a bit of chaos. Despite a rocky start, forgetting turkey calls and dealing with the elements, we encountered several turkeys, experiencing close calls that kept us on the edge of our seats. We discussed our strategies, the challenges of hunting in dense woods with plenty of downfalls, and the thrill of interacting with these cautious birds.

The next day brought more opportunities and lessons learned. We adjusted our tactics, moving locations to intercept a particularly vocal turkey. After a suspenseful wait and some strategic calling, I managed to harvest a fine turkey, overcoming obstacles like an awkward shooting position and a momentarily misplaced camera.

Throughout the episode, we shared tips on turkey behavior, calling techniques, and the importance of adaptability in the field. We also reflected on the enjoyment of hunting together, the camaraderie.

Matt had a close encounter with a turkey that came within 20 yards, but dense obstacles in the woods blocked his view, preventing a clear shot. As the turkey moved away, Matt tried to call it back but with no luck. Returning to the field to hunt without a blind, Matt's setup with decoys led to the turkey spotting him, causing him to miss the shot. In a last-ditch attempt, Matt took another shot, which turned into a successful harvest, concluding the hunt on a high note.
