DTVC Extra 27, The Star Trek Franchise, "Star Trek III: The Search for Spock" and "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home"

"DTVC Extra" are shorter solo episodes that I'll be posting on some weeks in addition to the main podcast. In this episode we're continuing our look at the Star Trek original cast franchise with "Star Trek III: The Search for Spock" and "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home." With the first film, I open with a short history of the blockbuster at that time, starting with "Jaws" in '75, and how Star Trek fit into that. I also get into the idea that the odd-numbered films are bad and the even-numbered ones good, and whether or not that holds up with part III. With the second film, I talk about how it wasn't originally one of my favorites, but how this viewing I really enjoyed it; I also look at how "End Game" follows some of its premise, and chat a little bit about the Challenger explosion that happened the same year this film was released.

    DTVC Podcast 163, "Angel Town"

    DTVC Podcast 163, "Angel Town"

In this episode I'm joined once again by Rich Hawes from the DTV Digest to discuss Olivier Gruner and his first film, "Angel Town." We look at where Gruner fits in terms of 90s DTV action stars, and how his career shakes out throughout the 90s and 00s. With "Angel Town" we break the film down, looking at the action and Gruner's performance.

DTVC Podcast 162, Dermot Double Feature, "Ruthless" and "Lights Out"

Ty from Comeuppance Reviews is back, this time for a Dermot Mulroney double feature. First we look at Art Camacho's new one, "Ruthless," which actually has a surprisingly high amount of ruth. Second, we look at the new one from Christian Sesma, "Lights Out," which also has Frank Grillo, Mekhi Phifer, and Scott Adkins. Finally, in our Spotlight on a Fight, we go back to "Sudden Death," where Van Damme fought a woman in a penguin mascot costume.

You can find Ty at comeuppancereviews.net, or on the Comeuppance Reviews podcast, which you can subscribe to on most major podcatchers.

DTVC Extra 26, The Star Trek Franchise, "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" and "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Kahn"

"DTVC Extra" are shorter solo episodes that I'll be posting on some weeks in addition to the main podcast. In this episode we're starting our look at the Star Trek original cast franchise with "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" and "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Kahn." In the first one, we open with a short history of how the show ended, and then its popularity grew, which led to making this film. From there I get into ways the film worked and ways it missed the mark. With the second one, I talk about how this is probably the best Trek film ever--at least it's my favorite.

    DTVC Podcast 161, "Pistol Whipped"

    DTVC Podcast 161, "Pistol Whipped"

Scott Murphy from All 90s Action, All the Time and New Horror Express is back to discuss another Steven Seagal DTV flick, this time 2008's "Pistol Whipped." Before we do though we get into why recent DTV action hasn't been as solid overall as DTV horror. Then in discussing "Pistol Whipped," we look at all the good, the bad, and the ludicrous of this film--and surprisingly for a Seagal DTV actioner, this has more of the first than the second two.

DTVC Podcast 160, "Road House" and "Road House"

DTVC Podcast 160, "Road House" and "Road House"

In this episode I'm joined once again by Will from Exploding Helicopter, this time to look at the two Road House films. First we look at the original, why it works in spite of itself, how it became a cult classic, and why it endures today. Then we get stuck in on the new version on Amazon. If the first one works so well, why does the second one not capture that magic?
