On this episode we talk with Chris Huriwai, a Māori vegan advocate, extreme sportsman and co-producer of the film MILKED. He has a history working in community health, working for 7 years teaching physical education and mentoring young people from primary to high schools at Te Hau Ora O Ngāpuhi. He’s a back-to-back 3-time world champion for street unicycling and has recently moved home after working at DCM, an organisation that assists rough sleepers and individuals who struggle to access sustainable housing. Chris is the co-founder of the animal rights project Aotearoa Liberation League. He is passionate about indigenous practices and using veganism as a decolonial tool.


We explore veganism, non-violence, capitalism & cruelty-free in the system, the importance of connection, expanding our awareness & learning, indigenous knowledge and ways of relating to the natural world, colonization & reparations, the impacts of the dairy industry on the ecosystem, animals, environment, our health and farmers.


Chris talks about his upbringing, connection to nature and animals from childhood, being a 3x unicycle world champion, working with children and his local community, having preconceived ideas about Māori people, seeking better outcomes, Tikanga Māori & being able to adapt, the creation of the documentary showcasing the reality of the dairy industry.
