    Episode 4: The Pride Episode

    Episode 4: The Pride Episode

It's Pride Month! In our fourth episode, we discuss how the LGBTQ+ community has an impact on the tech industry and vice versa. It's first important to know how LGBTQ+ leaders in the tech industry like Tim Cook provide hope and support to other queer people. Not only do LGBTQ+ employees in tech champion the community, they also help shape and guide software that would leave those in the LGBTQ+ community behind. Think things from the smaller scale like a gender drop down, to larger scale like entire applications! We also dive a bit deeper into some history surrounding gay rights and how that plays into mobile apps like Grindr.

Unfortunately, not everything is sunshine for the LGBTQ+ community in the tech industry. Because the community is a minority in industry, it's easier for other employees to harass LGBTQ+ coworkers. While its possible in bigger companies, its easier to encounter harassment in smaller companies who may not have those policies fleshed out. Large corporations aren't completely absolved of any wrongdoing, especially when it comes to donations to and lobbying of lawmakers. Many tech companies like Comcast, AT&T, and others have donated to lawmakers that sponsored anti-trans legislation or had a score of "0" with the Human Rights Campaign, an organization at the forefront of LGBTQ+ rights.

Episode 3: Tech Companies & Antitrust

Episode 3: Tech Companies & Antitrust

In this week's episode, we talk about antitrust law and monopolistic behavior by tech companies, especially in recent times. Because tech companies control what consumers can and can't see, it's not always easy to spot what it looks like. However, Amazon and Apple are easy to pick on to show what examples of monopolistic behavior looks like. Plus, actions taken by tech companies impact small businesses, both in the short term and long term. We also discuss what the US government can and can't do to regulate antitrust law and monopolistic behavior (and we even get sidetracked on lobbying and how consumers are impacted by monopolies too).

This episode is longer than usual, but is packed full of great conversations that break antitrust law and tech companies down into understandable discussions.

If you're looking for more information on monopolistic behavior and antitrust law, head over to the socialbyte post, 'It's All About Apple:' https://socialbyte.io/its-all-about-apple/

    Episode 2: Technology and Change

    Episode 2: Technology and Change

Welcome back! Our second episode explores the first blog post written on socialbyte where we investigated how technology has been a crucial necessity for change. We encourage you to read it yourself at https://socialbyte.io/technology-a-crucial-necessity-for-change/. We didn't want to regurgitate the same information in the blog post here in this episode, so instead we explored other topics that we couldn't get to in the blog post. Some of what you can expect is how technology has driven change throughout civilization, how technology has transformed to become forms of accountability - 'active' and 'passive' accountability - and how technology has provided a spotlight for people of color who traditionally don't have a place to share their experiences.
