This is a technical-ish podcast. I am a software developer who self-identifies as a work in progress.

I go through life in a meticulous, analytical, reflective, and slightly kooky way. I'm no expert in any one thing, but I believe my experiences and the manner with which I engage in them can be of value to those who are about to go (or currently going through) what I have.

I give a technical sprinkle to my wide array of interests and lessons learned in hopes that you can find this content useful, helpful, or relatable.

#4 A Slow New Year's Ramp-up & My Two Cents on Getting Things Done by David Allen

Happy New Year everyone! Welcome back to Dev in Progress! Today is just a little ramble on how I feel coming into 2021 (slow as heck). Does anyone feel the same way? Does anyone out there relate?! I also included a little snippet I recorded a while ago on David Allen's Getting Things Done and I promise it's the last you'll hear of it! Haha, I have definitely referenced that book one too many times in my content.

Anyway, hope you have a fantastic start to your new year, and if you're not already having one, don't worry, I feel you. Let's be more forgiving to ourselves and check back in a couple of weeks and I'm sure we'll be skyrocketing.

    Until next time,

    Jiana

#3 The Optimal Stopping Problem & How Digital Minimalism Affects Me as a Developer and Untangled My Bias for Technology

#3 The Optimal Stopping Problem & How Digital Minimalism Affects Me as a Developer and Untangled My Bias for Technology

Hello world, and welcome to another episode of Dev in Progress! Today, we briefly go over the optimal stopping problem (and a little bit on explore/exploit) from the incredibly fascinating book Algorithms to Live By by Brian Christian and Thomas L. Griffiths. The secondary title of the book is The Computer Science of Human Decisions. Now if that doesn't sound right up my alley, I don't know what is.

Then we go into the book I just finished called Digital Minimalism by Cal Newport. I discuss the questions it raised for me, how it made me feel as a developer, what it made me realize about solitude and social interaction, how it opened my eyes to the realities of our digital world, and slightly mitigated my long-standing bias for all things technology.

Let me know your thoughts and feelings at jiana.dev@gmail.com, so we can chat about all these fascinating things and geek out about the freaking Computer Science of Human Decisions! And also if you have an easy way of explaining that math to me, that'd be much appreciated. After all, I am only just a dev in progress.

    Hope you enjoy!

#2 Creativity, Communication, & Domain-Driven Design - Layered Architecture and Model Element Patterns in Software

#2 Creativity, Communication, & Domain-Driven Design - Layered Architecture and Model Element Patterns in Software

Hi there! Dev In Progress is back with an episode going into a few things I've spent time learning this week. A little bit on creativity backed by Twyla Tharp and Mark Manson, a little bit on communication à la Alan Alda, Chris Voss, and Chris Hadfield. And a lot a bit on Domain-Driven Design thanks to Eric Evans.

In this episode, I put on my developer goggles and delve a lot deeper into sub-concepts from Eric Evans' book, Domain-Driven Design. Specifically, we go into Layered Architecture (User Interface Layer, Application Layer, Domain Layer, Infrastructure Layer), and Model Element Patterns (Entities, Value Objects, Services). I view these as guidelines to help the everyday developer conceptualize and categorize and think in a way that is clean, loosely coupled, and encourages good programming (and naturally modeling) practices.

Join me on this anecdotal adventure processing and sharing the things I've learned in my journey to be a better developer and person. Hope you enjoy it!

#1 The Never-Ending Battle with Productivity Optimization

#1 The Never-Ending Battle with Productivity Optimization

Oh, hey there. This is the first brain dump of a young lady who works as a software developer and self-identifies as a work in progress.

Today's topic of interest is digital organization and productivity systems. When does setting up your productivity system go from useful and necessary planning to over-engineering and procrastination from more meaningful things?

I'd say "Find out on this pod!", but it's a question I still have. After all, at heart, this is a podcast about a girl in progress.
