Bonus Eclipse Episode: Experiencing the Eclipse "IN the Community"
Welcome to the final Special Eclipse Edition of the “IN the Community” podcast! The “IN the Community” podcast is all about events happening in and around central Indiana and it just doesn’t get any bigger than the total solar eclipse yesterday, April 8. The path of the total solar eclipse was directly over Indiana, plunging most of the state into darkness for several minutes. WISH-TV Event’s Manager, Allan Haw, took the opportunity to head to downtown Franklin, Indiana to the eclipse festival there to talk to folks who came from all over to see the big event, and after having seen it for ourselves I think we can safely say that the eclipse lived up to the hype (even if the traffic didn’t). I hope you enjoy some of the conversations I had with people as they came to experience the eclipse with us “IN the Community”.

Bonus Eclipse Episode: How to take the best photos of total solar eclipse
The total solar eclipse is a once-in-a-lifetime event and something to capture with a photo to remember, but the process can be difficult with the changing conditions.Verizon experts have shared helpful tips to getting the best picture on a smartphone:
Only zoom in on the phone if it has optical zoom capabilities. However, it’s best to stick to zoomed-out photos for clarity.
Turn off the flash on the phone.
Use the “burst mode” feature to help capture multiple pictures at once. Photographers can always go back and delete the ones that do not turn out. The burst mode will help capture the corona, or the little bit of the sun’s rays that are visible during totality.
Experts tell News 8 that shooting in “RAW mode” will give the best quality photos of the eclipse.
Also, photographers can use a solar lens cover to protect their cameras, but experts say that may not be necessary.
“Manufacturers don’t actually take a stance on this when it comes to the lens on cameras and facing the sun,” said Jeff Kew, a Verizon spokesperson. “There is no proven widespread damage when it comes to pointing your phone lens toward the sun.”
An added bonus of using a solar lens is the tool can help view sunspots.

Bonus Eclipse Episode: Indianapolis Motor Speedway prepares for eclipse-viewing party
The Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Sunday was gearing up for Monday’s total solar eclipse.
As the home of the Indianapolis 500, billed as “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing,” the track is ready to become the biggest viewing party for the greatest spectacle in space.
The speedway will hand out “the greatest spectacles” for eclipse viewing, which are IMS-themed solar glasses.
IMS will open the track at 2:15 p.m. Monday so people can venture on the track for the actual eclipse and experience totality on the over-100-year-old oval.
The team started planning its eclipse-viewing party on April 8, 2018, and expects at least 50,000 people to come to the track.
Doug Boles, president of Indianapolis Motor Speedway, said Sunday, “I think the atmosphere will be a lot of fun. It’s going to be different, obviously, than a race crowd. Around 75% of the people that are coming never purchased anything from the speedway before, so likely they’ve never even been here before so that’s going to be new.”
NASA will set up shop at IMS. Retired astronaut Drew Feustel will be among other activities and even some gear-like rocket engines.
“If you think about racing and space, there’s a lot of crossover,” Boles said. “A lot of the engineering and math that goes into having a great spacecraft is the same kind of stuff that has a great race car, so there are a lot of similarities and we are excited to partner with them.”
Boles say the party has the potential to be the largest eclipse gathering in the United States because IMS can handle so many people.
