Rocky VII: Adrian's Revenge (our sports episode)

For the last fortnight, you've either been obsessing over the London Olympics or doing your darndest to try and avoid it. Podcast! The Movie this week straddles that line perfectly - half in awe of the spectacle, half taking chunks out of competitive sports for fun and/or profit. Mostly fun.

Surely there couldn't be too many opening ceremonies with a giant Voldemort scaring choreographed children while Queen Elizabeth II parachuted out of a helicopter, soundtracked by Sir Paul McCartney? Well, maybe there should be more! We talk the big night's winners and losers, along with some sports that have received popularity boosts from unlikely sources.

Alasdair, Rob and Mitch racked their brains to come up with sports-themed inclusions for AV&A, the end result is a doosy. The Dropkick Murphys, early 90s Hollywood training montages and sports-based mini games all emerge victorious, while the losers clutch their stomachs and vomit uncontrollably.

Speaking of losing control over your bodily functions, Alasdair wraps up the show with a quiz that tests our knowledge of where sports and pop culture collide. Sorry, Gordon Bombay and his Mighty Ducks don't even get a mention, that's how intense this competition is!

Katie Holmes and the Hound of the Baskervilles

Katie Holmes and the Hound of the Baskervilles

This week's podcast begins by referencing a bunch of old greying folk musicians, because that's exactly what all cutting edge pop culture podcasts do. Fact. So says Alasdair Duncan, Rob Newcombe and Mitch Alexander, collectively known as Podcast! The Movie. Another fact: Katie Holmes is off the chain and back to Hollywood with a movie plot that sounds startlingly familiar...

Our other coverage is devoted to Passion Pit’s Michael Angelakos and a rapid fire barrage of news snippets with our own sardonic take on them. Noone is safe - not Peggy Olsen, not Rick Rubin and certainly not YOU.

Who's winning our attention this week with AV&A? Well, there's a whole bunch of new sludge metal from Baroness, some wicked old Final Fantasy game and the return of the philly cheese steak. You could be eating one right now if you really wanted!

It's been a while since the podcast team did a round of Marry, Boff, Kill. Some say this is a good thing, but Al, Rob & Mitch just don't listen. What fate lies ahead of three of Tom Cruise's former flames, the cast of Dawson's Creek and three latest incarnations of Sherlock Holmes? It's a mystery, unless you tune in!

A family that podcasts together stays together

A family that podcasts together stays together

Rob Newcombe, dear poor, sweet, ill Rob Newcombe – dost thou not see what horror has befallen the cast of Podcast! The Movie when thou is absent, stricken with the dreaded influenza? Well for starters, we start writing in dreadful Shakespearean prose – not our strong point, we’ll be the first to admit. But to add to this misery, Mitch’s ginger brother Liam (regional Zach Galifianakis lookalike winner, Brisbane 2011) is brought in as a last minute ringer. This is why we can’t have nice things. Luckily, Alasdair’s Mum Barbara is also on hand to keep the conversation intelligent, or at least keep the C-bombs to a minimum.

We’ve already wasted too much space on the introduction, so to sum up, the gang talks this year’s Emmy nominations, American rapper Pitbull’s upcoming adventure to Alaska and when it’s not OK to tweet that a gig sucks.

Our favourite things from the week are unveiled in AV&A. Chairlift, Sons Of Anarcy, tuna & pickle bagels…that’s just a sneak preview. The real meat of the section will blow your mind.

Finally, as a way to justify our constant internet trawling, Alasdair plays quizmaster again, testing whether we’ve been paying attention to the world wide web this week. All that and more in this week’s Podcast! The Movie.

Know Your Internet Product: the Fun and Nice Episode

Know Your Internet Product: the Fun and Nice Episode

Sometimes it's a real struggle to find topics worthy of our judgement. This is not one of those weeks. Not when you've got the announcement of a 2013 Fleetwood Mac tour (to hell with the presumably exorbitant ticket price, Alasdair is going!) or the magical nerd microcosm that is San Diego Comic Con. Oh, and there's also something to do with Katy Perry's spinning peppermint bra being a health hazard, but we're obviously too high brow to talk about that, right? WRONG! Even our favourite guest buddy Madeleine Laing can't resist.

Our favourite things this week range from new tunes by local Brisbane band Teen Sensations - too much fun to be a joke band - and slavish adoration of new horror flick Cabin In The Woods.

Finally, what happens when two people (Madeleine and co-host Rob Newcombe) are forcibly cut off from the internet for a few days? What memes, breaking news and manufactured controversies are they deprived of? We find out in a quiz that combines learning, fun and humiliation in one tidy package!

All that and more in this week's Podcast! The Movie. Don't forget to follow us on Twitter @podcastthemovie
