S7 Ep. 11: I Am Not a Victim: Overcoming Adversity

S7 Ep. 11: I Am Not a Victim: Overcoming Adversity

As a sexual assault survivor who was kidnapped and sexually assaulted at the age of twelve, Kevin McNeil understands what it is like to be a victim, but more importantly he knows what it takes to move beyond that point.
As a twenty-year police veteran, Kevin McNeil worked as a Special Victims Unit Detective for twelve of those years investigating child abuse crimes. After making the decision to retire from law enforcement, Kevin decided to use his extensive background and genuine insight to educate others on the effects of abuse.
We cover a lot of ground in this conversation – from Kevin’s harrowing story, to his views on what needs to happen to reform the police and justice system, to his deep desire to educate and raise awareness about trauma, to the power of healing….
You will not want to miss hearing Kevin’s inspiring story!

S7 Ep. 10: What Is Restorative Justice?

S7 Ep. 10: What Is Restorative Justice?

I speak with sonya shah, founder of the Ahimsa Collective, about restorative justice. We break down what it is, what role a “victim-offender dialogue” can play in one’s healing journey, and the world changing efforts that she and her team are making to radically change the way we address harm as a community.
She also shares about some of the conversations she’s had with those who have caused harm and what they’ve had to say in answer to the question, “Why did you do this?”

S7 Ep. 9: The T.H.R.E.A.D. Approach to Healing Trauma

S7 Ep. 9: The T.H.R.E.A.D. Approach to Healing Trauma

Dr. Leonie Mattision is a powerhouse woman! She and I discuss her Jamaican roots, immigration to America, battle to heal that included a stroke, and how she conquered the abuse for good.
We also discuss how she studied the Bible, where she found role models in several women who bore similar suffering and grew stronger because of it. Dr. Mattison applied her academic mind to these stories and saw the parallels with modern-day personal and professional transformation. From this work, she created The T.H.R.E.A.D Six-Step System to help survivors free themselves from past trauma and live an abundant life.
As we came to at the end of our talk, we both came to reinforce this truth that "Your destiny is more important than your history!"

Transforming Trauma S5 Ep. 3: On Freeing Each Other: How My Liberation Is Bound to Yours

Transforming Trauma S5 Ep. 3: On Freeing Each Other: How My Liberation Is Bound to Yours

Eve reflects on the fear of feeling joy and the risk of getting hurt. She explores vulnerability and the impact on us and our relationships when we do the work of healing and move through emotions rather than try to bypass them or distract ourselves whether by compulsively care-taking others or being detached from ourselves. She calls White listeners to action to get involved in the fight for Black lives and to consider how shame and feeling unsafe make activism overwhelming and inaccessible at times.
