Deconstructing The Beauty Industry Hype with Jessica DeFino

Deconstructing The Beauty Industry Hype with Jessica DeFino

Jameela is joined by beauty culture critic Jessica DeFino in a candid conversation about where her current research and journalism is taking her, after years of covering a multi-billion dollar beauty industry for major women’s magazines & beauty apps in the US. The two discuss the science of skincare products VS the science of skin, why the wellness industry makes you feel bad about yourself and the inherently disappointing pursuit of ‘anti-aging’. You’ll hear about current beauty trends that are unsettling your skin with longer term (and unknown) effects, some of the natural ways your skin repairs itself plus some practical takeaways (without a 12 step routine).

Internet Burnout with Seyi Akiwowo (Re-Release)

With everything happening right now in the world, it's a good time to revisit Jameela's conversation with Seyi Akiwowo, Founder and Executive Director of Glitch, an organization committed to ending online abuse by educating people on how they can engage positively, respectfully and justly in all digital spaces. They discuss what it means to be a "digital citizen," being trauma-informed not trauma-led, self-care for black women, the ways both Seyi and Jameela have learned from their own internet mistakes, and Glitch's work in training women how to be safe online, as well as challenging giant social media corporations to take more ownership of what happens on their sites.

The best podcast

I have listened to every episode of I Weigh. Jameela discusses topics, issues and questions that most of us face in this modern world and normalises the madness we live in to bring us together, make us laugh and not feel so ashamed or alone. Thank you Jameela for being you and sharing your beautiful mind with us xxxxx

Brilliant

I’ve genuinely enjoyed so many of the episodes and seriously tip my hat to Jameela for her openness, eloquence, frankness, energy. I have also recently lost my parents and several other losses have given rise to grief - the episode about grief with Megan Devine is the most refreshing take on grief that I’ve yet to hear. It resonates.
