Melissa Caddick: Fraudster's death to remain a mystery

Warning: This story contains graphic content.

We finally know what happened in the missing persons investigation that captured a nation. Melissa Caddick, the fraudster who stole $23 million from her closest family and friends, is dead.

So said the deputy state coroner, who handed down her report last week. But how did she come to this finding? Until now, all we knew was that Caddick’s right foot had washed up on the shores of a remote beach. This was shortly after she went missing, nearly two and a half years ago.

Today, investigative reporter Kate McClymont joins Samantha Selinger-Morris on The Age and SMH daily news podcast Please Explain to discuss what we now know - and what we’ll never know - about what happened to Melissa Caddick.

Here is another great true crime podcast we think you will enjoy.Inside the Tribe is an original true crime podcast that goes inside a sinister cult called the Twelve Tribes, a Christian fundamentalist sect with communities around the world, including in Australia. It tells the story of Marc and Rose, an idealistic young Sydney couple who unwittingly joined the Tribes in 1996, looking for a life of peace, harmony and communal living.

But before long, Mark and Rose and their two young children find themselves in a world of bizarre rituals and extreme beliefs, under the influence of a charismatic leader. They are made virtual slaves, their family shuffled around the world to prevent them from escaping.

So who are the 12 Tribes, and how their leader managed to build a global following, unchecked for 50 years?

Well-informed but poorly presented.

I don’t think I’m saying anything new here that other commenters haven’t already noted, but I found this podcast in equal parts frustrating and fascinating. The content was well-researched and well-collated (though I would expect that from two major Australian journalists). It went deep into Melissa Caddick’s past, drawing a line of her crimes and misdemeanours earlier from earlier her career to the fraud that blew up in her face.

However, I could have done without all the sensationalism and smug laughter from the hosts. This crime was no joke, and it deserved to be treated as more than a pearl-clutching bit of scandal. I was dismayed that a serious look at the impact on the victims was saved for the last half of the last episode.

If you can look past the worst of it, this is actually an incredibly informative podcast. And it should be, given Kate McClymont has been on this case for years. I just wish they hadn’t sneered their way through ten episodes.

Disappointed.

Disappointed in this podcast, I expected a lot more!
Waste of time to be honest!

Luring story, repetitive episodes

Often had to check if I was listening to an earlier episode as it was a lot of repetition
