36: Go Getter: Marina Go's rise from humble journalist to Boardroom Chair and why more women need to say YES to their seat at the table

36: Go Getter: Marina Go's rise from humble journalist to Boardroom Chair and why more women need to say YES to their seat at the table

Marina Go stands for everything I want to be when I grow up.

Intelligent, ambitious, a critical thinker, a clear communicator and 'oh so' calm.

She's the quintessential GO getter, unafraid of being out of her comfort zone, quietly confident, well-prepared and unflappable ...creating a career out of consistently putting her hand up for opportunities she wasn't sure she was cut out for, but she took them anyway (and nailed them).

Originally a magazine journalist, Go started out as a cadet at the Daily Mirror before putting herself forward for the role of the Editor of Dolly.

I know, I know, copy girl to editor, it's a stretch right?  But GO backed herself and while she didn't get the job initially, the successful candidate didn't last long and Marina was waiting in the wings.   She was appointed the Editor at Dolly magazine at 23.

The rest of her career kind of trajects the same way. Editor to executive to boardroom boss. One, after the other.

Fast forward 25 years and Marina has turned being on boards into a full-time job. She's battled the boardrooms of insanely intimidating male dominated industries like the NRL, where her first ever board seat at the Wests Tigers ended up with her being nominated as Chair on her first day.

The club was in turmoil at the time and male journalists annihilated her relentlessly in the press for attempting to challenge the status quo.  Marina didn't flinch.

These days it would take too long to list all the boards she's been on because we'd be here all day, but here's snapshot of the companies she's covered:

    🙌  PwC Diversity Advisory Board

    🙌  Super Netball Limited

🙌  The Walkley Foundation for Journalism

    🙌  Ovarian Cancer Australia

    🙌  Booktopia

    🙌  7 Eleven

More recently, Marina's current portfolio includes:

👩‍🎓 Independent Non Executive Chair of Adore Beauty

👩‍🎓 Independent Non Executive Director at Transurban 👩‍🎓 Non executive Director Energy Australia

👩‍🎓 Non executive Director at Autosports Group

👩‍🎓 Non executive Director at the Australian Institute of Company Directors

Are you exhausted yet? I am.   So I'm going to stop talking and let Marina do the rest...

This is an inspiring episode that left me thinking about our conversation for days and finally convinced me to apply for my first board role, after sitting on the idea for years.

    Enjoy x

35: Get out of your own way, get over yourself and launch your personal brand with Carlii Lyon

35: Get out of your own way, get over yourself and launch your personal brand with Carlii Lyon

I heard a really, profound quote about self-promotion from a fellow female founder on a business podcast I was listening to recently and I can't stop thinking about it and how strongly it resonates with me and what I do.

"Humility as a founder or business owner looks different. Humility doesn't mean hiding."

"It means I might look or feel like an idiot pitching this or trying that or, this might not work but I'm going to do it anyway because this mission is more important than my ego."

It's so true.  Everyone (including me) automatically assumes that when we talk about taking "risks" in our business, in either starting or scaling it that we're taking purely about financial risks.

But when it comes to personal brand, those risks are personal too.  It's risky to put yourself out there.  What if you fail, what if people don't like you?

But when you own and run a business....if you're not prepared to sell yourself, how can you expect anyone else to?

My guest on the podcast today is one of Australia's leading personal branding experts.

Carlii Lyon has spent the last 15 years shaping the personal reputations of remarkable individuals from across the globe.

As a former international personal publicist, her past clients include, world famous supermodel (Miranda Kerr), New York Times bestselling authors, inventors, musicians, and even a British celebrity foot reader!

Today, Carlii is dedicated to helping everyday individuals, executives and entrepreneurs discover the power of reputation by proactively shaping their professional identities, communicating their value, and becoming visible to the audiences that matter.

Recognised as a thought leader on the topic, Carlii has been invited to speak to the teams of Top 50 ASX Listed companies and iconic brands internationally; including the likes of Financial Times, Spotify, GPT Group, Gilbert + Tobin and L’Oréal to name a few.

She is a regular contributor to Forbes Australia on the topic of personal branding and has been featured in Smart Company, CEO Magazine, Sky News and The Sunday Telegraph.

    In this episode we discuss:

⭐️ What is a personal brand?

⭐️ How to know if you're ready to put your personal brand out there

⭐️ How to get over yourself and push past Imposter Syndrome

⭐️ The 5 C's of personal brand, clarity, consistency, content, connection and confidence

⭐️ Developing a plan to help you confidently achieve your personal branding goals

So stop waiting for someone else to magically start promoting you, and step out of the shadows and into the light of your own personal brand with Carlii Lyon.

34: Warts and all: Your Story is Your Superpower (here's why you need to share it...) with Leonie Dawson

34: Warts and all: Your Story is Your Superpower (here's why you need to share it...) with Leonie Dawson

In the online course world, there's lots of "coaches" spruiking lots of promises, but Leonie Dawson is the real deal.  And I know because she's an open book.   Leonie is, by her own admission, a wildly creative introvert who's the former editor of the Australian Government business website, business dot gov.au and now the CEO of her own namesake company, Leonie Dawson, that's signed up 50,000 subscribers to her database and turns over millions of dollars each year.

Leonie's also an international best selling author, multiple-award winning businesswoman and one of the OG bloggers when blogging first came onto the scene in the early 2000's.

Leonie swears often and calls her customers names like blossom and beautiful soul and she talks regularly about taboo subjects like ADHD, autism, money, mental health and mothering...you would think people would run from that 'in your face' honesty and discomfort.

But on the contrary Leonie's attraction is magnetic and her community cannot get enough of her.   I wanted to share Leonie's story because so many women I work with in business are afraid to be authentic, they're afraid to tell their warts and all stories, admit failure or be themselves - because they think that's NOT what their audience or customers want.

Leonie is not for everyone. But she's cool with that. Because the community she attracts are superfans and she's created a $14 million dollar business off their devotion and investment. Oh and she only works 10 hours a week.

She's back!! Veteran journalist, editor and media expert, Ali Izzo is in the house and on the poddy for the second time this year!!  And it's for good reason.

In today's episode of the podcast we're delving into the wonderful, and often mysterious world of Affiliate Marketing with Ali who know performance marketing like a pro having worked in women's magazines for the last 20 years.

Now first things first, if this is a whole new world to you, you're not alone, because Affiliate Marketing is not my wheelhouse either! But stay tuned because by episodes' end you're going to be halfway to expert status and you can complete your AM degree and start making a ton of cash with our special 90 minute Affiliate Marketing Masterclass with Ali later this month!

In case you're unsure, Affiliate Marketing is a performance marketing channel where brands pay for customer acquisition by partnering with influencers or affiliates who promote their products.Building part of your business or personal brand based on an Affiliate Marketing program is also statistically more likely to get your product or service featured in media in areas like product reviews or recommendations? How? Because Journalists are incentivised to include affiliate links in their stories, as it brings in an extra revenue stream for the business and helps them meet their KPIs.

Affiliate marketing isn't just about making money; it's also about forging valuable partnerships, creating authentic content, and delivering value to your audience.   As a media professional with 20 years of experience working in women’s lifestyle titles and a special interest in fashion, beauty and health - there is no one better placed to take us behind the scenes of the Affiliate Marketing industry.
