The Motive for Telling the Good News.

Hey everyone and welcome to The Refinery.

Go tell it to the mountains is the theme for the next few Sunday mornings, and emphasises the need for modern day followers of Christ to broadcast the good news that was proclaimed so dramatically at the time of His birth.

Today’s message is, The Motive for Telling the Good News.

The angels hung out over the battlements of heaven to announce the good news that Jesus Christ was born.

It is interesting to study the book of Acts and discover the dynamic enthusiasm of the early followers of Christ as they gave testimony to Him.

Today lets consider the various incentives the motivated them to share the good news.

    Until next time

    The Peace Of The Church.

    The Peace Of The Church.

    Welcome to The Refinery.

The Church The Body of Christ has been the theme for the last few Sunday’s.

These messages are primarily based around Paul’s letter to the Ephesians.

Today we are discussing, The Peace Of The Church.I read a story recently of a pastor - evangelist who was holding meetings in a small rural town in Kentucky back in the 1940’s.

He was in the home of one of the oldest families in the area  and to his delight, he discovered that some member of the family had been a deacon in that church for more than 100 years.

Think of that legacy for the family, someone throughout the generations had been serving in the local church for more than 100 years.

The church had kept records since 1839, when it first started, and it was in the family’s care.

For the visiting pastor, the book was interesting reading.

In the minutes of almost every business meeting, the same entry appeared.

“The peace of the church was called for.”

The visiting pastor was told that the moderator of the business meetings would ask, “Brethren, are we at peace?”

No one knew what might follow.

I have no doubt that their meetings were interesting and well attended.

But whatever the shortcomings of these people, in what ever way they may have fallen short, they sincerely tried to carry out the literal words of our text.

They meant to have peace if they had to fight with each other to obtain it.

If these people were too strict when it comes to church discipline, perhaps our churches today are too soft, too lazy.

Who else besides a plain, simple, New Testament church, where every member is equal in rank and privilege with every other member, a pure democracy, would even have the privilege of being at war among themselves.

Sometimes a churches like a shallow, clear mountain stream where every ripple can be seen.

At other times, a church may be like a deep, muddy river, calm and placid on the surface but torn by dangerous undercurrents.

    “Be at peace among yourselves.”

This text provokes three important questions.

    Until next time

Christ, The Head Of The Church

Christ, The Head Of The Church

    Welcome to The Refinery.

The Church The Body of Christ is the theme for the next few Sunday’s.

These messages are primarily based around Paul’s letter to the Ephesians.

Today we are discussing, Christ, The Head Of The Church.

Paul was concerned about making clear the relationship of Christ with His people.

Sometimes his emphasis was on Christ’s people, His church, as His body.

At other times, Paul’s emphasis was on Christ as the head, or Lord, of His church.

The later emphasis is true of our text, “He is the head of the body, the church.”

This simple but profound text has three down to earth meanings for us.

    The Need for Parents.

    The Need for Parents.

    Welcome to The Refinery.

Today we have James August from Christchurch New Zealand bringing us a message about "The Need for Parents."

    Exodus 17:8-13 NKJV

    Victory over the Amalekites

8 Now Amalek came and fought with Israel in Rephidim. 9 And Moses said to Joshua, “Choose us some men and go out, fight with Amalek. Tomorrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the rod of God in my hand.” 10 So Joshua did as Moses said to him, and fought with Amalek. And Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill. 11 And so it was, when Moses held up his hand, that Israel prevailed; and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed. 12 But Moses’ hands became [a]heavy; so they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it. And Aaron and Hur supported his hands, one on one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun. 13 So Joshua defeated Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword.

    The Goal of the Church.

    The Goal of the Church.

    Welcome to The Refinery.

The Church The Body of Christ is the theme for the next few Sunday’s.

These messages are primarily based around Paul’s letter to the Ephesians.

Today we are discussing, The Goal of the Church.

    Ephesians 4:7-16 NKJV

    Spiritual Gifts

7 But to each one of us grace was given according to the measure of Christ’s gift.

    8 Therefore He says:

    “When He ascended on high,
    He led captivity captive,
    And gave gifts to men.”

9 (Now this, “He ascended”—what does it mean but that He also [a]first descended into the lower parts of the earth?

10 He who descended is also the One who ascended far above all the heavens, that He might fill all things.)

11 And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers,

12 for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the [b]edifying of the body of Christ,

    13 till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ;

14 that we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting,

15 but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head—Christ—

16 from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love.

The total impression of this passage from Ephesians 4 is that Christ has a goal, a supreme standard for His church, and that goal is so high, so exalted that it taxes the imagination to comprehend it.

Nonetheless, here and now, in the body of this flesh, we are to strive to attain it.

Specifically, this passage leaves three impressions on the mind and the heart.

First, Christ has given us the grace whereby we may reach the goal.

Second, the means of growth for reaching that goal are at hand.

And third, we must not stop nor be satisfied short of the goal, no matter how high the standard nor how great the difficulties in the way.

    Until next time

    Stay in the Blessings
