Welcome back for part 2 of Episode 52, our birth & postpartum story to date. This interview was conducted at about 8 weeks postpartum and in it I share on my experience with breastfeeding, including a mastitis scare, how I’ve navigated sleep deprivation, what support systems I had in place for the fourth trimester, how I’ve been able to nourish myself to support optimal recovery and so much more!

In listening to this episode you will receive practical advice on how to eat well in the postpartum period so that you and your family can thrive.

This is the final in a two part series on my preconception, pregnancy, birth and postpartum story. I hope you enjoy it!

Also a note to advise that after a year of the podcast, it's taking a winter break. Episode 54 will be aired in four weeks!

Episode 52: Our Preconception, Pregnancy & Birth Story

Episode 52: Our Preconception, Pregnancy & Birth Story

Today's episode is a little more personal than normal, but to mark the end of my maternity leave I thought it was fitting. Today you’ll hear me being interviewed by Jade Spears from the Birth & Postpartum Diaries Podcast where I share my story of preconception, pregnancy, labour and birth. It’s raw and personal, but there are also plenty of takeaways in here for anyone who’s thinking about conceiving, is trying to conceive or who is pregnant.

    You’ll hear about:
    - The importance of preconception testing and what testing I chose to do to prepare for pregnancy
    - How Bella’s conception took longer than expected
    - The importance of continuity of care in pregnancy and birth
    - An alternative to the oral glucose tolerance test (OGGT) for gestational diabetes testing
    - My exercise and movement plan in pregnancy
    - What I ate while pregnant
    - How I managed the first trimester morning sickness and food preference changes
    - How I managed (and overcame) pelvic girdle pain

The big message that I believe is so important because I did the opposite, is why I believe we must practice surrendering in birth and not grip too tightly to a "birth plan”.

Stay tuned for part two on my postpartum journey.

I hope you enjoy and get lots from this episode.

This week I’m interviewed for the Honey Health and Wellness podcast on all things metabolic health, hormones and blood glucose control. I explain exactly what the metabolism is, while clarifying myths around speeding up the metabolism or slowing it down. In addition to this, I explain the importance of a healthy gut in order to have well regulated hormones.

It’s a jam packed and very practical episode for all women wanting to understand and optimise their metabolic health and body composition.

Episode 50: Could Your PCOS Actually be Hypothalamic Amenorrhea? With Elly McLean

Episode 50: Could Your PCOS Actually be Hypothalamic Amenorrhea? With Elly McLean

In today’s episode I’m interviewed by my friend and colleague Steph Lowe on the topic of hypothalamic amenorrhea (HA) and polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). Female hormonal conditions commonly mistaken for one another which, as you will learn in this episode, has possibly grave impplications on recovery.

You will learn about HA and the reasons for why this evolutionary protective mechanism exists. We then discuss PCOS, the Rotterdam criteria for diagnosis, how it differs to polycystic ovaries, the most common causes for it and the role of the oral contraceptive pill. We also discuss the problems with classifying an irregular period, amenorrhea or HA as PCOS, the prevalence of misdiagnoses, testing, treatment and so much more.

This is such an important topic. It’s one that I face in clinic all of the time because unfortunately a diagnosis of HA is often overlooked and a diagnosis of PCOS is so often poorly understood.

I hope you learn something new.

Episode 49: Explaining RED-S - relative energy deficiency in sports With Elly McLean

Episode 49: Explaining RED-S - relative energy deficiency in sports With Elly McLean

This week I am interviewed by Matt Sipala to discuss a sports nutrition related topic that isn’t spoken about much and that is Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport OR RED-S. When I was studying at university it was a condition actually referred to as the Female Athlete Triad, but as you’ll learn from listening to this episode, it has had a re-brand in recent years.

RED-S is a serious condition which can adversely affect the health and performance of athletes when there is a negative balance between dietary energy intake and the energy expenditure. More commonly associated but not limited to endurance based athletes, RED-S can both be present in males and females ranging from your elite level athlete to your everyday athlete. In this episode I explain in detail what RED-S is, the symptoms, the early warning signs and the risks associated with having it.

If you have a history of disordered eating or are an athlete that pushes the boundaries or historically doesn’t listen to their body that well, this episode is for you.

Disclaimer: This episode mentions eating disorders which may be triggering for some listeners, so listen with caution.

It’s such an important topic. So please share this with anyone whom you think may benefit from listening! I hope you enjoy the show!

Episode 48: Pelvic Pain, Endometriosis, Treatment & Fertility With Dr Thea Bowler

Dr Thea Bowler is a general gynaecologist & fertility specialist. Thea has post-fellowship training in laparoscopic surgery, endometriosis and pelvic pain and provides care for women seeking hysterectomy, fibroid treatment and management of ovarian cysts. She regularly works with adolescents and women on hormonal conditions including PCOS, menstrual disturbance, menopause medicine, PMS and PMDD.
Thea has completed a pain management course and has published several academic articles, including most recently, a guideline on the management of pelvic pain flares. She has written chapters for a seminal Australian textbook in Obstetrics and Gynaecology and continues to be involved in research and medical education. She is well across the research, which is very evident in our interview!

In this episode we discuss the complexities of treating pelvic pain and why endometriosis surgery is not your only option, as well as why it shouldn’t be your only option. Thea explains the connection between inflammation, immune health, gut health, hormones, pelvic floor tightness and endometriosis as well as endometriosis pain. She explains why as part of a holistic treatment strategy, all of these connections should be addressed for optimal patient outcomes. We also touch on fertility and how surgery may or may not benefit fertility outcomes.

If you love listening to Thea and need support, Thea does treat virtually so I encourage you to explore her offerings in the show notes. I wish more women suffering pelvic pain had access to Dr’s like Thea!
