The Score: Cowboy-Style Heel-Horse Training Insights with Miles Baker

The Score: Cowboy-Style Heel-Horse Training Insights with Miles Baker

Miles Baker has drawn the attention of the team roping world as Trevor Brazile’s partner on many-a-great horses, and two weeks ago he shared with us an explanation of the foundation he puts in the head horses he and Brazile ride.

This week, Baker is back with his cowboy-style heel-horse training insights, straight from his Oklahoma ranch. Baker—who headed for Brazile at this year’s BFI—had a hand in the bay horse Joseph Harrison rode at this year’s National Finals Rodeo, and he shares with us the training insights that helped make that horse and other top-tier talent.

The Score: 2021 CTEC & BFI Champions

The Score: 2021 CTEC & BFI Champions

The weekend at the Lazy E Arena started off with the 37th Annual Cinch Timed Event Championship. After the final round was complete on Saturday, March 13, Poplarville, Mississippi’s Marcus Theriot was crowned the Cinch Ironman after knocking down 25 head in 322.4 seconds, worth $100,000
Then we watched as some of the elite ropers in our sport piled into the Lazy E to compete at the 44th annual Bob Feist Invitational where we watched as Manny Egusquiza and Kory Koontz knocked down their sixth steer at high team back in 7.16 seconds to secure the win with a time of 46.48 seconds on six head, worth $150,000 for the team.
To top off their weekend, Kory’s 13-year-old dun gelding, Remix won the Heel Horse of the BFI
If you remember, Kory was in a major wreck on Jan. 16, 2020, which left Koontz’s truck and trailer totaled, and he lost his new mount Rudy. Remix came out of the accident beaten up.
Koontz, with the help of Outlaw Equine’s Josh Harvey and team, fought hard to help bring Remix back to fighting shape. After weeks of therapy on the AquaTred and walker, Remix came back better than ever before.

    The Score: Miles Baker

    The Score: Miles Baker

Miles Baker was Trevor Brazile’s partner on the head horse, Smartys Dunny, that just sold for $250,000 last weekend at the Horse Sale at Rancho Rio, and he’s partners with Brazile on many of the top-tier horses you’ve seen the King of the Cowboys on everywhere from the BFI to the American Rope Horse Futurity Association’s World Championship.
He’s part of the secret sauce for Trevor Brazile, Joseph Harrison and Lari Dee Guy when it comes to making great horses.
We tapped him in fall 2020 to provide us with this audio roping and horsemanship lesson, and it’s one like we’ve never offered before. He breaks down how their horses got prepared for the ARHFA—where Brazile won over $100,000 alone.
Baker has studied Brazile’s horsemanship, and he’s keyed in on the preparation needed to create the kind of horses the $7-million cowboy can take to the next level.

The Short Score: RFD-TV's The American Heeling Champion Paden Bray

The Short Score: RFD-TV's The American Heeling Champion Paden Bray

Paden Bray is our special guest on this episode of "The Short Score".
This is the first time we've had Paden on the podcast. While these interviews are usually pretty short on "The Short Score", this one, we got a little lengthy because we had a lot to talk about. He just won $100,000 heeling for Erich Rogers at RFD-TV's The American, and he took time out of his day to chat with Chelsea Shaffer about his win.

    The Score: ProRodeo Road Trip

    The Score: ProRodeo Road Trip

With the rodeo season once again up in the air thanks to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, it feels like as good of a time as any to have a light-hearted episode about the good old days on the rodeo trail in a different era.
So to do that, we racked our brains for the best cowboy travel stories we've ever heard told, and we called up the guys who lived to tell the tales so we could all have a good laugh at their expense.
We started with Travis Tryan, and then move to Trey Yates, Trevor Brazile, Patrick Smith and finish out the episode with Cesar de la Cruz.
