    • Running

Today we'd like to warmly welcome accredited Sports Nutritionist and with his graduate diploma in Performance Nutrition Mac Baker. You might know Mac from his podcast The Macabolic Podcast or from his instagram @mackenziebaker_ . Mac is currently studying his Masters in Sport and Exercise Nutrition while working as a nutrition coach with Fortitude Nutrition Coaching.
In this episode, we dive deep into eating for performance and what it means to fuel as an athlete compared to the weekend warrior. Mac goes into detail on the dangers of blindly following advice from the fitness influencers we see on social media and highlights the power of eating well. We touch on mental health and the slippery slope athletes should be aware of when tracking their food.
We then take a bit of a deep dive into Low Energy Availability (LEA) and RED-S (Relatively Energy Deficiency in Sport). For anyone with a high training volume it is crucial to be familiar with these terms. Mac breaks down the signs and symptoms to look out for and the population at risk. Mac highlights the importance of fuelling well for not only performance but to prevent long-term health detriments and maintain social health.
Further, we unpack plant-based diets for athletes and speak on some of the important considerations surrounding such a nutrition strategy. Mac refers us to his blog post on vegan diets for athletes, you can find this here; https://www.fortitudenutritioncoaching.com.au/blog/what-should-vegan-athletes-eat
Mac has a very well-rounded approach to nutrition, he gives us some practical tips and simplifies some very complex topics. We absolutely loved having him on and would encourage you to check out his socials and podcast on Spotify or apple; Macabolic Podcast
