The violent death of a gentle soul: Elijah McClain
In August 2019, police responded to a 9-1-1 call about a suspicious black man wearing a ski mask, walking in a high crime area at 10:30 at night. Within minutes, the young man, Elijah McClain, would be placed into a carotid hold that would render him unconscious and was given an overdose of ketamine and was declared brain dead 3 days later. In this episode, we discuss who Elijah McClain was, what led to his arguably illegal detention, the actions of the police during this call, and what has happened since his death.
